Eagles won the doubles point, but the Bulls won four of the six singles matches

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team hoped to clinch a berth into the 2013 Mid-American Conference Tournament with a victory over the University at Buffalo Friday afternoon, April 19, but the Bulls made sure that did not happen. Buffalo was 3-0 in three-set matches en route to a 4-3 victory indoors at the Chippewa Club.

Eastern Michigan dropped to 8-13 overall and 3-4 league action, while Buffalo improved it record at 12-4 and 3-4 in the MAC.

The MAC Championships format has changed for the 2012-13 campaign, and only six of the nine teams will qualify for league postseason play in 2013. The Eagles are tied for the sixth and final spot with the Bulls, however, Buffalo would win the tiebreaker via the head-to-head victory today. UB closes out the regular season tomorrow, April 20, at the University of Toledo.

"A disappointing loss," added Head Coach Ryan Ray. "Basically it came down to a trio of three-set matches, and Buffalo was slightly stronger to win this close one.  We will need to recover well over the night and get ready to give everything and more against Akron tomorrow."

The Eagles swept the doubles competition, winning all three matches to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Nino Mebuke and Klara Supejova teamed up at the No. 1 position to win 8-3 over Tanvi Shah and Miranda Podlas. Mariya Toncheva and Ankita Bhatia knocked off Gopika Kapoor and Anamaria Candanoza, 8-4, at No. 2, while Daphne Friedrichs and Zsofia Biro won 8-7 against  Laura Fernandez and Marta Stoyanova.

However, UB proved to be a different team in singles action beginning with an easy victory at first singles where Shah won, 6-3, 6-1 to tie the match up.  After a win at sixth singles from Eastern Michigan, the Bulls claimed the next three matches to clinch the victory.

Eastern Michigan closes out the regular season Saturday, April 20, against the University of Akron. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m. inside the Chippewa Club.
