YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team heads to the University of Notre Dame Wednesday, April 10, for a non-conference tilt with the Fighting Irish beginning at 5:30 p.m. The Eagles (14-16; 4-5 MAC) are fresh off a 2-1 series victory over Bowling Green State University, while the Fighting Irish (19-10; 4-5 Big East) took two-of-three against Villanova over the weekend and host Michigan Tuesday, April 9, before taking on the Green and White.
LISTEN FOR FREE ONLINE: A free audio broadcast of Wednesday's game as well as this weekend's series with the University at Buffalo, April 12-14, will be streamed on Eagle All-Access (EMUEagles.com/showcase). Veteran play-by-play voice Chad Bush will join analyst Greg Steiner to cover all the action.
A BRIEF HISTORY: The Eagles and Fighting Irish will meet for just the fifth time Wednesday at Frank Eck Stadium as Notre Dame wraps up its seven-game homestand. EMU's lone victory in the all-time series was a 5-3 triumph April 15, 2003, when the Fighting Irish were ranked No. 13 nationally. Notre Dame got the best of the Eagles last season, 12-4.
NON-CONFERENCE ROUNDUP: Through 21 non-conference games, the Green and White holds a respectable 10-11 record, with a 9-10 showing on the road and a 1-1 ledger at home. EMU is 4-2 in its previous six non-conference tilts. Senior pitcher Taylor Dimmerling has fared particularly well out of conference this season, posting a 2.03 ERA in nine relief appearances while amassing a 2-0 record and holding opponents to a .200 batting average. At the plate, Sam Ott has been stinging the ball at a .357 clip with 15 RBI. Adam Sonabend also has 15 RBI over the 21 games, while Jamie Simpson has 14 and John Rubino has 10.
The Eagles have already matched their out-of-conference win total from 2012, when the squad finished 10-16. The 2011 squad which went 37-22 compiled a non-conference record of 18-9 which has been the best performance under fifth-year Head Coach Jay Alexander.
CAREER DAY FOR JOHNNY: Shortstop John Rubino set a career-high for hits in a game and posted two RBI as well on a 4-for-6 afternoon as the Eagles defeated Bowling Green, 11-6, Saturday, April 6. Rubino followed that game up with a 2-for-5 performance in Sunday's series-clinching 13-6 victory. He finished the weekend 6-for-14 (.429).
STINGING THE BALL: The Eagles roughed up a Bowling Green pitching staff which entered the weekend third in the MAC with a team ERA of 3.89. Falcons pitching surrendered 28 runs on 38 hits as EMU hitters batted a robust .322 for the series. Bowling Green's 12 errors did not help matters, leading to nine unearned EMU tallies. Lee Longo was especially brutal to opposing pitching, batting an even .500 (6-for-12) with a home run, double and five RBI.
TWO STRAIGHT HOME SERIES ON TAP: Oestrike Stadium will be the site of two consecutive MAC series as the Eagles host MAC East Division opponent Buffalo, April 12-14, and West Division rival Western Michigan, 19-21. After three weekends of MAC play, the Eagles are tied for fourth place in the West Division and tied for sixth overall in the conference.
The upstart Bulls made a surprise appearance in the 2012 MAC Tournament and have fought their way to a 6-3 start to conference play this year. EMU swept a road series from the Broncos last year and hope to continue that winning trend while trying to secure a MAC Tournament berth for an eighth straight year.
TIME CHANGE FOR BUFFALO SERIES: The series opener against Buffalo Friday, April 12, has been moved up from a noon start to a 3 p.m. first pitch. Saturday's game will still begin at 3 p.m., while Sunday's finale starts at 1 p.m.
