Men's Track and Field Sweeps Relays at Spartan Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team recorded the same number of victories (four) as it did a season ago in the Spartan Invitational at Michigan State University, April 5-6.

The hammer throw was the only even that took place on Friday, April 5, and the Green and White did most of its damage of day two of the meet, Saturday, April 6. The Eagles swept the relays, starting with the team of Chris Scott, Cameron Bolton, Matthew Williams and Jay Saunders took the 4x100-meter relay in a time of 42.28. In the 4x400-meter relay, Darrell Butler, Scott, Tyler Ross and Jeff Elam crossed the finish line in 3:21.10 to win the race.

EMU recorded two victories in the field events as Max Babits leaped 5.18 meters (17-feet 0-inches), the fourth-best mark in EMU history, to take the pole vault while sophomore Solomon Ijah claimed the crown in the javelin throw with a toss of 52.02 meters (173-feet 11-inches).

Butler and Bolton each grabbed second and third-places finishes in events. Bolton raced a 10.82 to place runner-up in the 100-meter dash while crossing the line in 21.77 for third in the 200-meter dash. In the hurdle events, Butler recorded a mark of 14.74 in the 110-meter hurdles for a second place finish, and the transfer from the University of Miami also ended in third place after a 55.54 in the 400-meter hurdles.

Nick Petro also earned a runner-up finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:30.24.

Eastern Michigan will head south for their next meet, competing in the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn., April 11-13.
