Eastern Falls 5-3 in Non-Conference Tilt at Notre Dame

Blaharski and Stanton continue to swing hot bats in road game

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped a non-conference matchup, 5-3, Tuesday, April 30, when it traveled to the University of Notre Dame. The Eagles (15-30-1) rallied from down 5-1 in the sixth, but the Fighting Irish (38-11) were able to hold on to the lead and take the game.

Katy Blaharski (Carleton, Mich.-Airport) continued swinging a hot bat, going 2-for-4, extending her hit streak to 14 games, while Amanda Stanton (Homer Glen, Ill.-Lockport Township) launched a team-best with her eighth home run of the season.

Lauren Wells (Lowell, Ind.-Lowell) was the starter for EMU going 3.2 innings. Wells (1-18) surrendered all five runs on eight hits in the loss. Lindsay Rich (Perrysburg, Ohio-Perrysburg) tossed the final 2.1 innings without allowing a run and scattering three hits. Laura Winter (24-9) picked up her 24th win of the season, throwing seven innings, allowing one run on four hits.

Notre Dame opened the scoring in the first inning when Winter singled through the left side to score Emilee Koerner who reached on a single to put UND up 1-0 in the early going. The Fighting Irish added on to its lead in the third. Jenna Simon grounded out the shortstop which scored Kelsey Thornton who had a bunt single earlier in the inning. The RBI groundout gave Notre Dame a 2-0 lead.

Eastern finally got on the board in the top of the fourth when Stanton poked a pitch from Winter over the left field fence to make it a 2-1 game.

However, UND distanced the gap in the bottom half by putting up a three spot. Winter led off the inning with a double down the line and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Cassidy Whidden then singled through the left side to score Carly Piccinich who ran for Winter and put Notre Dame on top 3-1. Whidden was out at second on the play. Chloe Saganowich launched a solo homer in the next at-bat to give the Fighting Irish a 4-1 lead. Jackie Bowe then hit a bases empty double to right center field and scored later on an infield single from Thornton, scoring UND's final run to make it 5-1.

The Eagles attempted to make a comeback in the sixth inning when they put two runs on the board. Jenn Lucas (Pinckney, Mich.-Pinckney) led off the inning by reaching on an error and Amanda Herron (Columbus, Ohio-St. Francis De Sales) did the same in the next at-bat. With runners at first and second, Mady Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) ran for Herron to bring Nellie Coquillard (Niles, Mich.-Niles) to the plate. Coquillard hit a single up the middle scoring one run and then Courtney Loe (Temperance, Mich.-Bedford (West Liberty)) grounded out to first, to score Hostetler and put EMU within striking distance, 5-3, where the score would remain.

Eastern finishes its non-conference schedule Wednesday, May 1, when it travels to East Lansing, Mich. to take on the Michigan State University Spartans. Game time is set for 5 p.m. and will be carried on the Big Ten Network.
