EMU track and field returns to Michigan after opening the outdoor season out-of-state
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – All members of the Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team will reunite after splitting for a pair of meets to open the outdoor season. The Eagles will travel northwest on Interstate 96 for the Spartan Invitational, April 5-6, in East Lansing, Mich. The meet will take place at Ralph Young Field on the campus of Michigan State University.
“We are excited have our entire team back together, and we look forward to competing hard and showing improvement over last week's meets,” commented EMU Head Coach Sue Parks.
Last week, EMU began the outdoor season with the Stanford Invitational and the Toledo Collegiate Challenge, March 29-30. At the Stanford Invitational, last year's NCAA Outdoor Championship qualifier Asia Rawls turned in the best performance of the meet for the Green and White, crossing the finish line in one-minute flat (60.00) for a runner-up finish in the 400-meter hurdles. Moreover, two Eagles that already hold school indoor records etched their names in the outdoor record books. Victoria Voronko ran the 5,000-meter run in 16:46.19 for the third-fastest time in EMU history. In the field, Alysha Newman finished fifth going against some of the nation's best pole vaulters in the Pole Vault Invitational at Stanford, March 29. Newman leaped 12-feet 6.75-inches for the fifth-best mark in EMU history.
At the Toledo Collegiate Challenge, the top finish of the day came from junior Kayla Pfund who took runner-up in the 2,000-meter steeplechase with a 7:17.41. EMU's record holder in the hammer throw, Lydia Gomez-Diaz, placed fourth in the event with a toss of 177-feet 2-inches (54.00 meters). Teammate Adrienne Waisner threw a personal-best 139-feet 6-inches (42.53 meters) for the seventh-best mark in school history. Senior Rachel Quaintance and freshman Ellie Braidic placed third in their events, as Quaintance ran 10:05.03 in the 3,000-meter run while Braidic leaped 11-feet 5.75-inches (3.50 meters) in the pole vault, good for tenth in EMU laurels.
At the Spartan Invitational a season ago, EMU brought five victories back to Ypsilanti. Shantavia Williams was able to capture a first place finish in the 200-meter dash with a 24.06 finish, while Beverly Elcock took first in the 400-meter dash in 56.82. Asia Rawls was the top-finisher in the 400-meter hurdles after completing the race in 59.65. EMU was also successful in the pair of relays, winning both the 4x100-meter relay and the 4x400-meter relay.
EMU Assistant Coach Jerel Langley is this week's guest on Women's Track and Field Weekly. Coach Langley talks about the team's trip out west to Stanford as well as performances in Toledo before discussing the upcoming Spartan Invitational.
