Eastern Dispatched by Huskies, 8-7, in Walk-Off Fashion

An NIU homer in the bottom of the seventh sent the Eagles home with a loss
DEKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped its 13th-straight game Sunday, April 14, when it dropped an 8-7 decision at Mary M. Bell Field at Northern Illinois University. EMU (10-25-1; 1-9 MAC) has now dropped nine consecutive Mid-American Conference games, while the Huskies (13-25; 3-7 MAC) have won two in-a-row.
Offensively, the Eagles had scored seven runs on eight hits with Aoife Duffy (Powell, Ohio-Olentangy Liberty) leading the way, going 2-for-3 with a three-run home run, the first round-tripper of her career. Abby Davidson (Westerville, Ohio-Olentangy Orange) and Amanda Stanton (Homer Glen, Ill.-Lockport Township) each had an RBI, while Stanton crossed home plate twice in the game.
Lindsay Rich (Perrysburg, Ohio-Perrysburg) made the start for the Eagles, tossing 4.1 innings and allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits. Jenna Igowski (Niles, Mich.-Niles) threw 0.2 innings in relief, while Lauren Wells (Lowell, Ind.-Lowell) was charged with the loss. Wells (0-15) went the final 1.1 innings and allowed one run on two hits. Jessica Sturm (8-10) picked up the win for the Huskies without allowing a run on three hits in 4.1 innings of work.
Northern jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first when Jennifer Barnett dropped down a squeeze bunt in to score Bryanna Phelan.
In the next half inning, the Eagles used a pair of NIU defensive miscues to tie up the game, 1-1. Stanton reached on an error by the NIU left fielder and later scored Davidson put the ball in play to queuing an error by the Huskies' shortstop.
Eastern turned up the offense in the third plating six runs on five hits to get up 7-1. Katy Blaharski (Carleton, Mich.-Airport) led off the inning with a single and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt from Courtney Nicholson (Navarre, Ohio-Canton Central Catholic). Nellie Coquillard (Niles, Mich.-Niles) drew a two-out walk to put runners at first and second for Stanton. Stanton put a single down the left field line, scoring Blaharski. In the next at-bat Courtney Loe (Temperance, Mich.-Bedford (West Liberty)) ripped a single to left moving Coquillard up to third, but an error by the NIU left fielder allowed Coquillard to score. Davidson knocked an RBI single to make it 4-1, setting the stage for Duffy with runners at first and second. Duffy blasted her first career homer to left centerfield, putting EMU up 7-1.
The Huskies cut into that deficit scoring one run in the fourth, two in the fifth and two in the sixth to tie it up, 7-7, before heading to the seventh inning. After being held scoreless in the top of the seventh, the Eagles took the field to try and send it into extra innings. After Wells got the first out of the inning, Shelby Miller stepped to the plate and punched a ball over the left field fence for a walk-off homer.
Eastern continues the 2013 campaign Tuesday, April 16, when Youngstown State University comes to Ypsilanti to take on the Eagles for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon at Varsity Field.
