Six Top-10 Finishes Highlight Day One of Stanford Invitational

Women's track and field athletes will continue to compete in the second day of action Saturday, March 30

PALO ALTO, Calif. (EMUEagles.com) – Select members of the Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team competed in the first day of action at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., March 29, opening the outdoor season for the Eagles.

Last year's NCAA Outdoor Championship qualifier Asia Rawls turned in the best performance of the day for the Green and White, crossing the finish line in one-minute flat (60.00) for a runner-up finish. NCAA Indoor Championship qualifier Alysha Newman competed against some of the best pole vaulters in the nation, placing fifth in the meet's pole vault invitational, with a leap of 12-feet 6.75-inches (3.83 meters), the fifth-best outdoor mark in school history. Newman currently holds the indoor EMU pole vault record of 13-feet 10.50-inches (4.23 meters).

Seniors Morgan Churchwell and Tatijana Jacobson along with freshman Latipha Cross turned in top-10 performances as well.  Churchwell finished sixth in her section of the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:34.63 while Cross raced the 400-meter dash in 55.23 to finish ninth. Jacobson leaped 5-feet 7.25-inches for seventh place in the high jump.

Freshman Vanessa Clerveaux will race in the finals of the 100-meter hurdles Saturday, March 30, after she qualified in the prelims with a 14.13. Other Eagles will compete in the following events during day two of the invitational: 400-meter dash, 800-meter run and the 4x400-meter relay.
