YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)
– The Eastern Michigan University softball team opened up the home slate for the 2013 season with a 6-5 victory in the first game of a doubleheader and followed it up with a 4-4 tie in the nightcap.

Game One

The Eagles put up a pair of three-spots in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings en route to a 6-5 come-from-behind victory over the Golden Grizzlies. Nellie Coquillard (Niles, Mich.–Niles) ripped a three-run homer to deep center field to open up the scoring for the Green and White. Amanda Stanton (Homer Glen, Ill.–Lockport Township) went 2-of-3 at the plate, including driving in the tying and go-ahead runs in the bottom of the sixth on a lined shot to center field.

Jenna Ignowski (Niles, Mich.–Niles) went the distance for EMU, giving up five runs, three earned on three hits, while walking five and striking out five. With the victory, Ignowski moves to 5-3 on the season. Erin Kownacki (3-4) took the loss for Oakland, looking good early on in the contest before the Eagles got the bats out to plate six runs late. Four-of-six runs were charged to Kownacki as she gave up six hits along with a pair of walks and four punchouts.

Oakland began the scoring with a four-run second inning in large part due to two errors from the Eagles. With two runners on, OU's Sarah Hartley attempted a sacrifice bunt, but was safe at first after a throwing error from Courtney Loe (Temperance, Mich.–Bedford), allowing a runner to score. A single by Alivia Nikolaus accompanied with a throwing error brought three more runs in to put the Golden Grizzlies up, 4-0. Two innings later, Hartley sent a shot to right center for a dinger, giving Oakland a 5-0 lead.

The EMU bats came alive in the bottom of the fifth as Courtney Nicholson (Navarre, Ohio–Canton Central Catholic) and Stanton both singled. Coquillard then wasted no time waiting for a pitch as she sent the first pitch in the at-bat deep over the center field fence to cut the margin to two, 5-3.

The comeback continued in the bottom half of the sixth inning with Katy Blaharski (Carleton, Mich.–Airport) walking, and Jenn Lucas (Pinckney, Mich.–Pinckney) reached on an error following an attempted sac-bunt. Amanda Herron (Columbus, Ohio–Saint Francis De Sales) singled to deep left, bringing around Blaharski and advancing Lucas to third. Nicholson attempted a suicide squeeze, but Oakland was able to get the lead runner out as home as runners advanced to second and third with one out. That's when Stanton ripped one right over the pitcher's head for a single, two RBI, and a 6-5 EMU lead. Ignowski would then retire the side, including a strikeout to end the game, capping off the Eagles' comeback victory.

Game Two

The Eagles brought its momentum over from game one on to game two, scoring the first run of the game in the bottom of the first. After Blaharski reached on an error, Lucas laid down a bunt to advance her to second. Blaharski then stole third before Nicholson brought her in, giving Eastern the 1-0 lead.

Oakland knotted the game up in the top of the third with a sacrifice fly to right center field. With two out and runners on the corner, the Golden Grizzlies secured the lead, pulling off a successful double steal to take a 2-1 advantage.

Eastern Michigan responded once again to knot the score at 2-all in the fourth.  Coquillard singled to open the frame before advancing on a sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, the Niles, Mich. native came around to score on a shot back up the middle of the bat of Abby Davidson (Westerville, Ohio-Olentangy Orange).

The see-saw battle continued in the fourth with Oakland plating a pair of runs to retake the two-run edge at 4-2 in the top of the fifth. However, EMU tied it right back up in the bottom of the stanza when Courtney Nicholson (Navarre, Ohio-Canton Central Catholic) blasted a two-run homerun to right center for her first round-tripper of the season .

Eastern again tried for the dramatics for the final at-bat with darkness settling in. After back-to-back groundouts to open the inning, Nicholson reach on an error and Stanton singled down the right field-line before Coquillard was intentionally walked to load the bases. Unfortunately, Loe grounded out to second base to end the inning as the game was declared a 4-4 tie due to poor visibility.

Eastern Michigan will be moving its two-game series with Central Michigan University up one day this holiday weekend due to the threat of inclement weather Sunday, March 31. Eastern was scheduled to open the 2013 Mid-American Conference schedule Saturday, March 30, with the Chippewas at 2 p.m. However, due to the potential for rain on Sunday, March 31, that contest has been changed to Friday, March 29, at 2 p.m. at Varsity Field. In total, the Eagles and Chippewas will hit the diamond at Varsity Field twice this weekend. First Friday, March 29, at 2 p.m. and the finale will have the same start time Saturday, March 30.
