Doubleheader set for Saturday beginning at noon
OXFORD, Ohio. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University baseball team opened its 2013 Mid-American Conference slate with a 4-0 setback to Miami University Friday, March 22, at McKie Field. The Eagles (9-11; 0-1 MAC) lost for just the second time in nine games, while the RedHawks (8-10; 1-0 MAC) snapped a three-game skid.
Miami starter Brooks Fiala (3-2) stymied the EMU offense with a six-hit, complete-game shutout and extended his scoreless-innings streak to 25.2 innings. Eastern Michigan's Neil Butara (2-3) took a loss for the first time in his last four starts, tossing 6.1 innings and giving up four runs on nine hits.
John Rubino extended his career-best hitting streak to seven games with a 1-for-4 outing, while Dae Bowden turned in a 2-for-4 afternoon at the dish. Lee Longo, Jamie Simpson and Mitchell McGeein all went 1-for-4 and accounted for the other three EMU knocks.
Four different MU players chipped in with an RBI Friday, but it was Ryan Elble (3-for-4) and Matt Honchel (2-for-4) who did the most damage by providing five of Miami's nine hits including a double apiece.
McGeein led off the EMU half of the third inning with a double to left center. The freshman infielder reached third base on a Rubino groundout but would end up stranded there. In the bottom of the frame, MU also put a runner at third with back-to-back singles, but Butara got a shallow fly and a 6-4-3 double play to preserve the scoreless tie.
The RedHawks jumped ahead, 2-0, in the fourth on an RBI double from John Crummy and an RBI single off the bat of Elble. The result could have been much worse for EMU, but Butara got Honchel to fly out with the bases loaded to end the inning.
EMU put a runner in scoring position in both the fifth and sixth innings, but failed to solve Fiala on both occasions. In the fifth, Daniel Russell flied out with Rubino at third. Adam Sonabend then went down on strikes with Bowden on second in the sixth.
Honchel made it a 3-0 affair in the seventh with an RBI double which was the result of an 11-pitch battle with Butara. Kevin Bower later drove Honchel home on a sacrifice fly to put the score at 4-0. The Eagles mustered just one hit and a walk through their final six outs and fell by that four-run margin.
Games two and three of the series will be played Saturday, March 23, as a doubleheader beginning at noon. Kendall Lewis (1-0) will duel with Mac Thoreson (0-3) in the first game, whiel game two will feature Brian Hill (1-0) against Nathan Williams (2-1).
