YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) —
The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team built up a nine-point lead before Kent State University swept the final five matches in a 24-15 setback Friday evening, Feb. 1, inside Bowen Field House. Redshirt seniors Filiberto Colon and Aaron Sulzer each recorded pins in a losing effort for the Green and White.

The Eagles (7-11; 1-3 MAC) jumped out to a 15-6 advantage midway through the bout on the heels of two falls and a decision, but the Golden Flashes (7-4; 3-1 MAC) spoiled EMU's upset attempt with a formidable lineup of middleweights and heavyweights that scored 18 unanswered team points.

Prior to the bout, Colon, Sulzer and redshirt senior Chris Eggert were recognized in a Senior Night celebration.

Colon (133 lbs.) wrestled in just his third match of the 2012-13 campaign and his first regular-season dual. The fall was good for his first win of the year. Sulzer (157 lbs.) moved to 4-0 in MAC competition and has a chance to become the second EMU wrestler in back-to-back years (Andrew Novak) to go undefeated in conference tussles with a victory against Central Michigan University, Feb. 8.

Redshirt junior Seth Schaner also evened his MAC record at 2-2 for the Eagles with an 11-10 decision at 141 lbs.

Steve Mitcheff got the Golden Flashes off to a 3-0 lead at 125 lbs. when he got the best of freshman Alexander Calandrino, 5-1. Calandrino could only muster a single escape while Mitcheff built up 3:41 of riding time to tack on an extra point at the end.

Colon tied the 133 lbs. match, 2-2, in the second period with a reversal against Mack McGuire. Before the middle frame ended, McGuire escaped Colon's grasp and recorded one point to go ahead, 3-2, with two minutes remaining.

McGuire's two-period lead proved irrelevant when Colon was able to work himself out of a dangerous situation and take control of his opponent. What appeared to be a near-fall situation in favor of McGuire became a pin opportunity for Colon. The Belleville, N.J. native finished the job at the 5:58 mark of the match and brought the home crowd to its feet. EMU jumped out to a 6-3 lead two matches in.

Riding the momentum of Colon's pin, Schaner recorded a pair of early takedowns to pull ahead of Luke Kern, 4-1. Schaner expanded his advantage to seven before Kern scored a takedown as the buzzer sounded to end the second period trailing, 9-4. A wild third period ensued with Kern making up a 10-6 deficit in the closing 10 seconds to tie the score. However, Schaner had built up more than 1:30 of riding time to take the extra point and secure an 11-10 win to put the Eagles ahead, 9-6.

The pace slowed a bit in the 149 lbs. match where redshirt freshman Mike Shaw trailed Andrew Candiello by a 2-1 margin after five minutes. Shaw's riding time advantage disappeared in the final stanza as Candiello kept him in his grasp to hold on for the 2-1 win and bring KSU back to within three, 9-6.

At 157 lbs., the match began as a closely-contested affair between Sulzer and Tom Sasfy. In the second period with the match 1-0 in favor of Sulzer, the Cleveland, Ohio native pulled off a quick attack on Sasfy and pinned him to the mat. Sulzer's fall was the second of the evening and stunned the KSU sideline while opening up a nine-point EMU lead, 15-6.

Kent State's Caleb Marsh used just enough scoring and more than three minutes of riding time in the 165 lbs. match against freshman Jacob Davis to claim a 4-1 victory. Davis made a final bid for a takedown as the third period wound down, but KSU earned its third win of the evening and cut EMU's lead to 15-9 with four matches to decide.

The 174 lbs. did not start off as planned redshirt sophomore Jacob Dorulla against Sam Wheeler, who built up a 4-1 lead after one period. Dorulla notched a pair of escapes in the middle frame, but Wheeler kept adding on takedowns to walk away a 14-5 winner by major decision. That made it a 15-13 contest.

EMU ran into a pair of nationally-ranked wrestlers beginning at 184 lbs., where redshirt junior Phillip Joseph took to the mat against No. 15 Casey Newburg. Action heated up at the end of the first period when Newburg took advantage of a failed takedown attempt by Joseph and scored three nearfall points for a 4-0 lead. Joseph was saved by the buzzer as his shoulder was squarely against the mat. The Lapeer, Mich. native fought his way to a takedown late in the third period, but Newburg held on to a 5-3 decision put the Golden Flashes back in the lead, 16-15.

Redshirt sophomore Anthony Abro was then tasked with battling the nation's top wrestler, Dustin Kilgore, at 197 lbs. Abro got on the board with a trio of first-period escapes but trailed, 8-3, after three minutes. Kilgore was ultimately too much for Abro, winning by technical fall, 21-6.

The Eagles still had a chance to tie the match if redshirt senior Chris Eggert could pull off a third EMU pin against Keith Witt at heavyweight. But the match yielded little in terms of offensive output as Witt recorded a 3-0 shutout. Kent State clinched the 24-15 win.

A final MAC dual-meet awaits the Eagles Friday, Feb. 8, at CMU in Mt. Pleasant, Mich. Action gets underway at 7 p.m.
