Eastern takes it highest finish in program history at the Midlands Championships

EVANSTON, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team completed the 51st Ken Kraft Midlands Championships at Ryan-Welsh Arena on the campus of Northwestern University.
The Eagles saw its best finish in the five times they have competed in the tournament as they placed 19th out of 47 teams and scored 21 points, which marks the third-highest point total in Green and White history.
Redshirt-senior Brandon Zeerip (Fremont, Mich.-Hesperia) was unable to clinch a win on day two of the tournament as he fell in a 19-6 major decision to Isaiah Martinez.
Iowa kept its commanding lead over the field on day two as it took home the team championship with 187.5 points, 85 points ahead of second-place Edinboro. The Hawkeyes had three first-place grapplers and four second-place winners, while sixth-place Maryland had two wrestlers take their weight division.
Eastern kicks off the 2014 year as it plays host to Northern Iowa in its second Mid-American Conference dual of the 2013-14 campaign. The Green and White will host the Panthers at the Convocation Center with the dual set to start at 1 p.m.
