YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) —
The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team lifted the lid on the 2013-14 season with a 101-38 exhibition game victory over Marygrove College, Nov. 4. It was the second time in the last in the last three seasons that the Green and White squared off with the Mustangs in an exhibition contest.

The Eagles shot 51.3 percent from the floor and 73.7 percent from the charity stripe through the contest, as they were led by senior Glenn Bryant (Detroit, Mich.-Oak Hill Academy (Arkansas)) on the offensive front. He notched 16 points on 8-of-14 shooting. Daylen Harrison (Akron, Ohio-St Vincent-St. Mary (Wyoming)) had 15 points on the night, while Mike Talley (Detroit, Mich.-Melvindale ABT) dropped in 11 points. Junior Karrington Ward (Lockport, Ill.-Lockport Township) led EMU under the basket pulling down 10 rebounds with seven on the defensive side of the ball. The Eagles totaled 10 blocks on the night, which was just two shy of the Mustangs' field goal total. Bryant rejected four shots, while Da'Shonte Riley (Detroit, Mich.-Detroit Country Day (Syracuse)) turned away three and Ward had two blocks of his own.

Eastern held Marygrove to just 12 field goals on the night, as the Mustangs shot 21.8 percent from the floor. Manny Washington had the best output for Marygrove, going 4-for-6 from the field and 5-for-7 from the free throw line, good for 13 points.

After winning the tipoff, the Eagles were able to convert on the first play of the evening with a three-pointer from senior guard J.R.  Sims (Fort Wayne, Ind.-Snider).  Two consecutive fast break layups from Ward and Talley put the squad up 7-0 and forced the first Mustang time out before two minutes had expired on the first half of the contest.

The Green and White kept Marygrove scoreless for five minutes, when a three-point shot by Cheikh Ka found its way through the rim to put the Mustangs on the board, trailing 12-3.

By capitalizing on four steals, the Eagles found themselves up 22-3 before a pair of shots from the charity stripe and another three-point conversion from Diante Taylor gave the Mustangs a slight run, only to have a stop put to their offensive effort thanks to a jumper by Bryant and a Ward dunk, extending the Eagles' lead 26-8.

As the final minutes dwindled to close out the first half, EMU managed to go on a 10-3 run, kick started by back-to-back dunks by Bryant.  An up-and-under by sophomore guard Jalen Ross (Greensboro, N.C.-Greensboro Day School) and a Sims tip-in put the squad up 45-17 heading into the locker room.

After allowing Marygrove to earn the first points of the half, Eastern went on a six-point run to take a 32-point lead over the Mustangs early in the second half. Harrison made two free throws and drove down the court in EMU's next possession on a fast break.  Harrison grabbed a defensive rebound on his next trip down the court, passing the ball out to Talley who converted on the fast break layup, extending the Green and White lead to 51-19.

Eastern Michigan took a commanding 40-point lead over Marygrove when it went on a 14-point run against the Mustangs beginning at the 14:40 mark in the second half. Senior Anthony Strickland (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Dearborn Heights Robichaud (Adrian)) found an open jumper with just two seconds left on the shot clock on a pass from freshman Trent Perry (Irving, Texas-Independence), allowing the Eagles to take a 66-26 lead with 10:09 remaining.

The Eagles headed into the final media timeout of the contest on a four-point run in which EMU held a 92-35 lead over the Mustangs. Eastern continued to build on its lead in the remaining three minutes of the game as freshman Ali Farhat (Dearborn, Mich.-Dearborn) converted for his ninth point of the game when he hit a mid-range jumper with 36 ticks left on the clock.

Eastern filled up the bucket for the final time in the contest at .4 remaining on the clock when Strickland had a fast break off a rebound to break the century mark and clinch a 63-point, 101-38, victory over the Mustangs.

The Green and White will be back in action Friday, Nov. 8, when they kick off the 2013-14 regular season with a home contest against Albion College.  The squad will start off a doubleheader matinee, tipping off at Noon in the Convocation Center, followed by the women's basketball team's matchup against Madonna University at 2:30 p.m.
