YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)--Eastern Michigan University's women's swimming and diving team handled the Zips of the University of Akron with ease, taking down the Mid-American Conference opponent 169-125. With the win, the Eagles improve to 2-2 (2-0 MAC), as well as extending their conference dual winning streak to seven, while the Zips fall to 0-2 (0-2 MAC).
The Eagles surrendered just five events out of 16 of the afternoon's events. Sophomore Audra Burtch (Goshen, Ind.-Concord) continued leading the squad in the 1000 free, pacing all swimmers with a time of 10:31.74. Freshman Allison Murslack (Gibsonia, Pa.-Pine-Richland) nabbed the runner-up finish just over two seconds after her teammate. The 500 free was controlled by junior Jessie Godlewski (Apex, N.C.-Apex).
For the sprinters, sophomore Becca Detro (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) was able to churn out winning efforts in both the 100 and 200 free and classmate Mary Kate MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-Detroit Country Day) earned a second-place finish in the 50 free as she touched in at 24.31, just .1 seconds after the top swimmer in the event.
Godlewski showcased her talent in the butterfly events, sweeping both the 100 and 200 with times of 56.49 and 2:04.32, respectively.
The 100 back was claimed by junior Sarah Ghaffari (Bolinas, Sweden-Torbergsgynasiet), and the breaststroke events were split between junior Monica Dorszewski (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) taking the 100-yard breast and freshman Genna Worthley (Portland, Maine-Deering) racing to a first-place finish in the 200 breast. Freshman Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central) wrapped up the 200 IM in winning fashion, notching a 2:08.59 mark in the process.
Diving also resulted in the accruement of winning points for EMU. Redshirt-senior Danielle Hulvey (Pickerington, Ohio-Central) had a strong showing on the 1-meter springboard, scoring 301.05 points, and as followed up by junior Lauren Dark (Chelsea, Mich.-Chelsea). Junior Karly Taylor (Munster, Ind.-Munster) led the squad on the 3-meter springboard, claiming a second-place finish with 255.90 points.
When the Eagles had reached the last five swimming events of the meet, they had secured their victory for the afternoon and swam the majority of their athletes as exhibition swims, including an exclusively exhibition 400-yard Freestyle Relay showing. With the help of strong performances across the board, the Green and White was able to improve its all-time record against Akron to a flawless 13-0.
The squad will host another meet Saturday, Nov. 9 against in-state rival Oakland University. The meet will be held in conjunction with the men's team and will begin at 1 p.m. in Jones Natatorium.
