EMU Clinches MAC Tournament Berth with Four Set Win at Kent State

Eastern topped KSU to earn the seventh seed at the 2013 MAC Tournament

KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team clinched a spot in the 2013 Mid-American Conference Volleyball Tournament Saturday, Nov. 16, by knocking off Kent State University in four sets Saturday, Nov. 16. The Eagles (16-15, 6-10 MAC) took down the Golden Flashes (12-17, 6-10 MAC), earning the seventh seed in the MAC Tournament by going 2-0 over the final weekend of the 2013 regular season. After dropping the opening set, 21-25, before sweeping the next three, 25-22, 25-7 and 25-15.

The Eagles offense was led by Stacey Perinar (Channonhan, Ill.-Minooka Community) posted her second highest kill output of her career with 17. Jill Briner (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park and River Forest (Northeastern)) and Katie Krasowski (Oak Lawn, Ill.-Marist) each notched double-digit kills with 10. Briner added 34 assists, while posted three aces, with Perinar contributing three of her own. Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville) notch six kills in her final regular season as an Eagle, while Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) added four in her final regular season contest.

Defensively, Corynne Smith (Norwalk, Ohio-St. Paul) notched 29 digs in the match, good for 7.25 per set. At the net, Megan Crawshaw (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan) and Krasowski each stuffed five attacks, while Perinar posted four.

The opening set was a struggle offensively for Eastern, hitting just .083 in the frame. Perinar led the Eagles with four kills, while Krasowski posted three. Smith notched nine digs in the frame. Offensively, the Golden Flashes hit .163, including five kills from Tin Adermi-Ibitola while Liz Reikow added four.

Perinar went on a tear in the second set, the sophomore roped in seven kills in the frame, while Briner posted four. EMU picked up the offensive output in the second frame. The Green and White hit .143 In after going 16-9-49. Smith added 10 digs in the frame, while Briner posted 11 assists. Perinar was the defensive catalyst at the net with a pair of blocks.

Set four was an offensive onslaught for EMU. Briner went 3-for-3 at the net, while adding eight assists. Smith posted six digs defensively, while Krasowski led the team in kills with four. Eastern hit .364 in the frame after posting 12 kills in 22 attempts with four errors.  Eastern totaled five blocks, including a solo from Briner and three assists from Crawshaw in the 25-7 lambasting of the Golden Flashes.

Perinar continued her to click offensively. The Channahon, Ill. native posted another six kills, while hitting 6-of-11, for a .545 attack percentage. Briner, Crawshaw and Short each added a pair of kills. EMU cruised to a 25-15 win.

EMU will now head to the 2013 MAC Volleyball Tournament. The Eagles will take on the University of Toledo in the second round. Eastern earned the seventh seed, while Toledo is the second seed in the tournament. The Green and White will take on the Rockets at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
