Tennis to Compete in ITA Midwest Regional

Qualifying Singles Draw
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team will take the short trip to Ann Arbor, Mich. to compete in the ITA Midwest Regional this week, Oct. 10-13. The four-day event will be held at the Varsity Tennis Court on the campus of host school, the University of Michigan.
Last season at the ITA Midwest Regional, sophomore Klara Supejova (Prague, Czech Republic-Sportovni Gymnazium Klandno) picked up the Eagles' only win in singles as she earned a bye in the first round before winning three straight matches to make it to the round of 32. In the round of 32, Supejova fell to DePaul's Matea Cutara in three matches.
On the doubles side, Diana Davitaia (Tbilisi, Georgia-Cowley County Community College) and Nino Mebuke (Tbilisi, Georgia-English-Spanish School) defeated Detroit and DePaul's duos before falling in the round of 16, 8-3, to Michigan, while the doubles team of Supejova/Mariya Toncheva (Burgas, Bulgaria-Sport Scholl Vasil Levski) and the duo of Daphne Fredrichs (Hufingen, Germany-Elisa Brandstrom Schule) and Ankita Bhatia (Gurgaon, India-Delhi Public Schools) each picked up wins in the consolation bracket.
This year in the ITA Midwest Regional there will be 48 qualifying singles players, 48 main draw singles and 48 doubles teams. The Midwest Region is made up of teams from Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio and the northern part of Illinois. The 48 qualifying singles players will need to win three rounds in order to advance to the main draw, which will take eight players from the qualifying rounds.
Mebuke, Bhatia and Fredrichs will represent the Green and White in the qualifying singles which starts Thursday, Oct. 10, while Davitaia and Supejova will represent the Eagles in the main draw singles which will kick off Saturday, Oct. 12.
The doubles teams of Supejova/Mebuke, Davataia/Zsofia Biro (Pecs, Hungary-Tasi Sport School) and Toncheva/Bhatia will begin competition Friday, Oct. 11.
