Eagles Fall in Four Setter at Western Michigan

After taking the first frame, EMU dropped three in a row
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team dropped its second straight road match at Western Michigan University Saturday, Oct. 5, in four sets. The Eagles (11-8, 1-3 MAC) won the first frame, 26-24, before dropping three in a row to the Broncos (11-7, 3-1 MAC), 20-25, 19-25 and 22-25.
The EMU offense was led by Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville) who posted a career-high 17 kills and a .500 hitting percentage in 34 attempts. Stacey Perinar (Channohan, Ill.-Minooka Community) added nine kills, while Devon Murray (Shelby, Ohio-Shelby) notched a career-best seven kills. Megan Crawshaw (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan) had seven as well, while Jill Briner (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park and River Forest (Northeastern)) set a career-high 32 assists in the loss.
Murray tied her career-high five blocks defensively, while Corynne Smith (Norwalk, Ohio-St. Paul) led the Green and White in digs, with 21.
Short posted five of her 17 kills in the opening frame with the Eagles posting a 26-24 win to take a one set lead. Murray went a perfect two-for-two. The Green and White hit just .128 but held the Broncos to a .068 attack percentage.
Western Michigan out-hit Eastern .205 to .171 in the second set to even things up. Ave Stout totaled six kills in the set to help WMU to a 20-25 set victory. Short added four kills in the frame while Murray and Perinar posted three in the frame.
Western's offense thrived in the third set to take a 2-1 lead after topping EMU, 19-25. Rachel Sheffer had six kills in the set as WMU hit .438 in the frame, going 16-for-32 with just two errors. On the other hand, EMU struggled, posting a .186 attack percentage. Crawshaw led the way with four kills, while Perinar and Short each notched three in the frame.
Short posted five kills in 11 attempts for a .455 hitting percentage in the final frame, but it was not enough as the Broncos took the frame, 22-25. Crawshaw, Murray and Perinar each had a pair of kills. Despite hitting .104, while holding WMU to a .070 attack percentage, the Green and White were unable to prevail.
Eastern returns to the Convocation Center Thursday, Oct. 10, for a matchup with the Central Michigan University Chippewas. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. and all the action can be followed on EMU Eagle All-Access.
