EVANSTON, Ill. (EMUEagles.com)
-- The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team finished its first meet of the 2013-14 campaign against host Northwestern University and the University of Illinois, Oct. 18.  The event was not scored, but the Green and White turned out several strong performances against the Big Ten Conference foes, including a handful of first-place finishes.

In the freestyle events, junior Sara Ghaffari (Bolinas, Sweden-Torsbergsgynasiet) scored second against both Northwestern and Illinois with a time of 24.33.  Sophomore Audra Burtch (Goshen, Ind.-Concord) swam the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:28.41, which was good for a second-place finish against Northwestern and a third-place finish against Illinois.

Breaststroke and butterfly proved to be fruitful events for the Eagles, as junior Monica Dorszewski (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) swam first- and second-place performances against both teams in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke, respectively.  Junior Jessie Godlewski (Apex, N.C.-Apex) paced all swimmers in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:03.29, while freshman Carly Jackson (La Porte, Ind.-La Porte) grabbed was a second-place finisher against both NU and Illinois in the 100-yard butterfly for her first top-three finish as an Eagle.

Godlewski also turned in a mark of 2:08.46 in the 200-yard individual medley and was the first swimmer to touch the wall in the matchup against Illinois.

The relay team of sophomores Becca Detro (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) and Mary Kate MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-Detroit Country Day), along with Ghaffari and freshman Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central) finished the 400-yard freestyle relay with a collective time of 3:35.41, which put them in second-place against Northwestern and third-place against Illinois.

The EMU divers came out dominant for the evening.  Redshirt-senior Danielle Hulvey's (Pickerington, Ohio-Central) score of 311.30 on the 1-meter springboard gave the Ohio native yet another first-place finish to add to her list of performances.  Junior Lauren Dark (Chelsea, Mich.-Chelsea) earned a second-place finish in the event, but she also led all divers on the 3-meter springboard with 294.15 points.  Hulvey scored a second-place finish, while redshirt-junior Melynee Saya (Nashua, N.H.-Nashua) notched a third-place cap in the event.

The Eagles dive right back into competition Saturday, Oct. 26, when they take on the Falcons of Bowling Green State University for the first Mid-American Conference matchup of the season.  The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Jones Natatorium.
