Day two in Ann Arbor completed

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – In the second day of the 2013 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional, the Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team saw action in both singles and doubles, including a student-athlete advancing into the singles main draw. The event is being held in Ann Arbor, Mich. by the University of Michigan at the Varsity Tennis Center.

Nino Mebuke (Tbilisi, Georgia-English-Spanish School) took on Julie Vrabel from the University of Notre Dame to qualify for the main draw.  In the consolation round, Eastern had four student-athletes continue competition. Ankita Bhatia (Gurgaon, India- Delhi Public Schools) had the lone victory for EMU, knocking off Kadi Ilves from Illinois State University. Mariya Toncheva (Burgas, Bulgaria-Sport Scholl Vasil Levski) dropped a three set tiebreak decision to Ohio State University's Nicole Flower and Maria Paula Ribero (Bucaramanga, Colombia) fell in three sets to Sephora Boulbahaeim from Eastern Illinois University. Daphne Friedrichs (Hufingen, Germany-Elisa Brandstrom Schule) was downed by Olga Chernova from Michigan State University in two sets.

In doubles play, the duo of Mebuke and Klara Supejova (Prague, Czech Republic- Sportovni Gymnazium Klandno) received a bye into the second round, while Diana Davitaia (Tbilisi, Georgia-Cowley County Community College) and Ribero took on Mayu Sato and Miloslava Shustova from IPFW. The duo dropped Sato and Shustova, 8-6, in their first match of the day. Bhatia and Toncheva faced off with EIU's Janelle Prisner and Boulbahaeim. They fell, 8-6, to the EIU duo.

In the second round of the doubles main draw, EMU saw a pair of losses. The Davitaia/Ribero team fell to Northwestern University's Alicia Barnett and Veronica Corning, while Mebuke and Supejova were unable to to restrain Ohio State's Miho Kowase and Grainne O'Neil. The EMU team dropped the match, 8-6.

Bhatia and Toncheva fell in the consolation round to Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Christina Colarossi and Diana Tokar, 8-7.

"It was great to see Nino get another solid win today to give us three players in the main draw singles," mention Head Coach Ryan Ray. "Our doubles wasn't our best performance, and we got outplayed by some talented players in our losses. That is certainly an area where we need more work. However as a whole, I like how we are competing against the best players in the region."

Saturday, Oct. 12, the Green and White will continue competition in Ann Arbor, including a trio of three student-athletes to take part of the singles main draw. Davitaia, Mebuke and Supejova will each participate in the main draw, while the doubles draw will continue at the Varsity Tennis Center.
