YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team will compete out of state for the first time this season, heading to South Bend, Ind. for the Meyo Invitational hosted by the University of Notre Dame. The invitational kicks off Friday, Feb. 1, at 4 p.m. before starting back up on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 10 a.m.
“This is a very competitive meet, and it will be big test for our athletes to step up their level of performance,” noted Head Coach Sue Parks. “We are ready to challenge ourselves against national level competition.”
The Eagles are coming off a victory at the competitive Grand Valley State University Quad, Jan. 26. Eastern's 166.50 points narrowly bested host Grand Valley State, who scored 162 points. Central Michigan took third with 97 points, and Hillsdale tallied 67.50 points.
As Coach Parks mentioned, the Meyo Invitational is known for bringing some of the nation's best track and field athletes to Notre Dame to compete. EMU distance runner Victoria Voronko will be one of the many Eagles looking to take on the national competition. At the GVSU Quad, Voronko raced to the top of the podium in the mile and the 3,000-meter run. Her mile time of 4:50.43 not only marked the sixth fastest time in school history, but was also the fastest time in the Mid-American Conference this season, passing the 4:53.98 mark that EMU's Morgan Churchwell set at the EMU Triangular, Jan. 11. The Stavropol, Russia native recorded a 9:44.40 in the 3,000-meter run, good enough for fourth in the EMU record books.
Another Eagle to keep an eye on this weekend is senior team captain Tatijana Jacobson. In four meets this season, the Woodville, Ohio native has three victories along with a runner-up finish in the high jump. She nearly broke the school record of 6-feet 1-inches with a 6-00 leap at the Eagle Holiday Meet, Dec. 7.
Last year at the Meyo Invitational, the Eagles' distance medley relay team set a new Eastern Michigan record by completing the race in 11:30.21. The distance medley team included Shantavia Williams, Beverly Elcock, Voronko and Churchwell. Moreover, Angela Scarber set a new EMU record with a 17.85-meter toss in the weight throw.
Jacobson joins Eagle All-Access for Women's Track and Field Weekly, discussing the team victory at the GVSU Quad along with her strong start in the high jump this season.
