Seven EMU student-athletes earn honorable mention honors

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University football's Jay Karutz (North Ryde, New South Wales, Australia-Holy Cross College) was named to the 2012 Academic All-MAC Team by the Mid-American Conference Thursday morning, Jan. 31. The Eagles also had seven members earn Academic All-MAC Honorable Mention accolades for the 2012 campaign.

A total of 38 student-athletes were named to the 2012 team.

Karutz turned in an outstanding senior campaign for the Eagles, ranking second in the MAC and 27th nationally with 42.74 yards per punt. A two-time Ray Guy Award candidate, he finished the season with 24 punts that landed inside the 20-yard line and 12 punts of 50 yards-or-better including a career-long 64-yard punt against Ball State University, Aug. 30. In total, he racked up 2,949 yards via the punt this season which ranks fourth-best in EMU history.

One of just 17 student-athletes in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision that is originally from Australia, Karutz finished his EMU career ranked fourth in career punting average (40.1) and punting yardage (8,063). He was a second-team Mid-Season All-MAC selection by Phil Steele as well.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics.  To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.  First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.

The number of honorees on the Academic All-MAC team is equivalent to the number of first-team selections or 33 percent of the number of nominees, whichever is greater.  The remaining student-athletes have been recognized as Academic Honorable Mention selections.

Tyler Allen (Lansing, Mich.-Eastern), Tyler Benz (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine Township South), Alex Gillett (Green Springs, Ohio-Clyde), Lincoln Hansen (Omaha, Neb.-Millard North), Andy Mulumba (Montreal, Quebec, Canada-Vieux Montreal), Bryan Pali (Kihei, Hawai'i-Kamehameha-Orange Coast Community College) and Dominique Sherrer (Cincinnati, Ohio-Colerain) each were named to the 2012 Academic All-MAC Honorable Mention list.
