Eagles fall to 0-2 in MAC matches
BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team nearly erased a 10-point deficit with three matches remaining before ultimately dropping a 19-14 decision to the University at Buffalo Friday evening, Jan. 18. The Eagles wrestled hard with a depleted lineup but fell to 6-10 overall and 0-2 in Mid-American Conference action.
“I was happy with our effort tonight regardless of the black and white results,” remarked Head Coach Derek DelPorto. “Our backs are against the wall with some bad luck and now we need to fight our way out. We must stay positive, get healthy and prep the best we can for the last leg of this regular season.”
The Green and White remained without the services of 2012 NCAA qualifier Jared Germaine for a second-straight weekend at 125 lbs. and redshirt freshman Vincent Pizzuto in the 133 lbs. slot.
In Germaine's spot was freshman Alexander Calandrino, who was outlasted by Max Soria, 10-5, to get the contest started with Buffalo gaining a 3-0 edge. Redshirt sophomore Jake Byers filled in nicely yet again for an ailing Pizzuto at 133 lbs., knocking off Justin Farmer, 3-1, in extra time to knot the score at three apiece. Byers' victory marked the fourth in his last five tries.
Close matches were the theme at 141 lbs. and 149 lbs.– matches which the Bulls won by scores of 3-0 and 2-1, respectively, to pull ahead, 9-3. Redshirt senior Aaron Sulzer made it a three-point affair, 9-6, when he doubled up Wally Maziarz at 157 lbs., 6-3.
Buffalo again won consecutive matches to take a 16-6 lead with three matches to decide. The back end of EMU's lineup then got to work and came up with a pair of major decisions to cut the deficit to just two points, 16-14, with just the heavyweight bout remaining.
At 184 lbs. redshirt junior Phillip Joseph came close to a technical fall but took the four-point major decision over Jarred Lux, 20-7. Redshirt junior Nick Whitenburg also earned a bonus point for his team when he won by a 16-5 score against Jeff Palmeri at 197 lbs.
The deciding match fell into the hands of redshirt junior Khodor Hoballah and his opponent, Justin Heisermen. Heisermen used a second-period escape and takedown to steal a 3-1 victory and make the final score 19-14 for the home team.
The Bulls improved to 1-5 overall and 1-1 in the MAC.
EMU returns to the mat Saturday, Jan. 26, in DeKalb, Ill. against Northern Illinois University and national powerhouse University of Missouri. The tri-meet is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
