PITTSBURGH, Pa. (EMUEagles.com) – Coming off a victory a day earlier, the Eastern Michigan University wrestling team dropped all three matches at the annual Pitt Duals Sunday, Jan. 13. The Eagles (5-9; 0-1 MAC) started the day off with a 21-14 setback to Lock Haven and managed just 18 team points in 27-9 and 24-9 losses to No. 12 Pittsburgh and No. 24 Bloomsburg, respectively.
In the opening match of the day, the Bald Eagles never trailed en route to the six-point victory. EMU held the lead against both the Panthers and Huskies through three matches, but lineups full of nationally-ranked competition outlasted the Eagles' combatants on both occasions.
Redshirt sophomore Jake Byers won two matches on the day. His only loss cam against No. 15-ranked Shelton Mack of Pitt. Freshman Alexander Calandrino also received credit for two victories with one decision and another by way of forfeit.
Byers won the Eagles' first individual match at 133 lbs. to make it a 5-3 contest after Lock Haven opened with a technical fall at 125 lbs. Redshirt senior Aaron Sulzer and freshman Jacob Davis each notched victories at 157 lbs. and 174 lbs., respectively, but Eastern Michigan was still behind, 18-9, following the 184-lbs. match.
A critical technical fall by redshirt junior Nick Whitenburg in his first dual-meet action after returning from injury pulled the Eagles to within four, 18-14, but redshirt junior Khodor Hoballah was unable to score a major decision against Harry turner, falling instead, 2-1, in the heavyweight match.
Pittsburgh forfeited the 125 lbs. match which afforded EMU an automatic 6-0 advantage. But aside from a decision by redshirt junior Seth Schaner at 141 lbs., the Eagles were unable to find a victory for the remainder of the contest. The Panthers scored six straight decisions followed by a fall at heavyweight for 24 unanswered points.
Despite just the one victory, EMU wrestlers competed hard against five top-15 wrestlers, losing only one bout by more than a decision. Joseph came closest to pulling off an upset, dropping his match to No. 14 Max Thomusseit by a 6-4 margin.
The final match of the day against Bloomsburg started off positively, with Calandrino and Byers each edging out 3-2 victories at 125 lbs. and 133 lbs., respectively. Bloomsburg gained control of the competition starting at 141 lbs., recording victories in seven of the final eight matches.
Joseph was the only other Eagle to post a win against the Huskies when he out-dueled Sam Shirey, 4-1.
The Eagles return to Ypsilanti to host Olivet Wednesday, Jan. 16, at Bowen Field House. Match time is slated for 7 p.m.
