Eagles wrap up play in Denton, Texas, with Oral Roberts at 1 p.m. CST
DENTON, Texas (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team made it five victories in-a-row with a straight-set (25-20, 25-16, 25-23) win over Hofstra University on day two of the Mean Green Volleyball Classic Saturday morning, Sept. 8. The Eagles (9-2) wrap up action in Denton with a 1 p.m. (CST) tilt against Oral Roberts University.
The Green and White registered a .214 attack percentage for the match and took advantage of a Pride squad (9-3) which hit just .039 with 30 attack errors. EMU is now 3-0 at the Mean Green Classic.
Newly-crowed all-time leader in kills and attacks at EMU, Rachel Iaquaniello, paced the Eagles with 11 kills while notching a .348 (11-for-23) attack percentage. Fellow senior Kristen Baker earned eight kills to go along with a team-best .389 (8-for-18) attack percentage. Freshman Alyssa Davis led the way in sets with 26.
Eastern Michigan opened the match on a torrid pace, putting the Pride behind, 20-10. A 10-7 affair quickly became 16-7 thanks to a service ace by Davis, kills by Iaquaniello and sophomore Megan Crawshaw, and four Hofstra attack errors. Despite a late scoring rally by the Pride to make it a 21-18 game, the Eagles held on for the 25-20 win to take the first set.
The second set saw Hofstra jump out to a 7-6 edge before EMU charged ahead for a convincing 25-16 victory. The Eagles once again played steady offensively while benefiting from poor attacking on the other side of the net.
The third set proved to be a back-and-forth affair, with the Eagles taking early command, 8-3. EMU held the lead until Hofstra came back to tie the score at 13 and go ahead, 14-13. Later in the set, back-to-back Pride kills put the Eagles behind by three, 20-17. A kill by junior Paige Roback capped-off a 4-0 EMU run and gave the Green and White a 21-20 edge.
EMU never trailed again in the set, as a Hofstra attack error resulted in the Eastern Michigan's 25th and the sweep.
