Baker named MVP, Iaquaniello and Short earn All-Tournament honors

DENTON, Texas (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team completed play at the Mean Green Volleyball Classic with a 3-2 (22-25, 25-21, 25-21, 13-25, 15-12) victory over Oral Roberts University Saturday afternoon, Sept. 8, to win the two-day tournament with a 4-0 record.

Senior Kristen Baker was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, while seniors Rachel Iaquaniello and Erin Short were All-Tournament Team selections. EMU is now 10-1 in tournament action this season and earned its second tournament title of the 2012 campaign.

Baker turned in a stellar two-day performance, hitting at a .378 (38-for-82) clip to go with three service aces, three solo blocks and 10 block assists. Iaquaniello, who became Eastern Michigan's all-time leader in kills and attacks on Friday, led all players with 54 kills on 174 attempts (.149). Short turned in 29 kills on 82 attempts (.232) and was second on the team in blocks with 16 (one solo, 15 assists).

As a team, the Green and White was much more efficient than its opposition offensively, converting attacks at a .229 clip to just .155 for the opponent.

The Eagles (10-2) have now won six matches in-a-row, while the Golden Eagles (4-7) went 0-4 at the tournament hosted by North Texas University. Four of the five sets were decided by four points or less including the fifth, when the Eagles held off ORU to claim a 15-12 triumph.

Four EMU players finished with double-digit kills including Iaquaniello, who led the way with 16. Short (12), Baker (10) and sophomore Megan Crawshaw (10) also tallied 10-or-more kills. Baker and Crawshaw each turned in .333 attack percentages, with Baker also chipping in defensively with a solo block. Freshman Alyssa Davis notched 38 assists to lead in that category.

The Green and White finished with a .206 attack percentage, while the Golden Eagles hit at a .260 pace.

Oral Roberts won a tight 25-22 decision in the first set, converting attacks at a .235 clip to EMU's .083 mark. The Golden Eagles hit set point with the score 24-19, but Eastern Michigan got to within two points before tallying the final point.

EMU won the next two sets by identical scores of 25-21. In the second set, Iaquaniello, Baker and junior Paige Roback combined for 13 kills as EMU out-dueled ORU by a .400-.344 margin in the attack category. Head Coach Kim Berrington's squad remained tough as Oral Roberts struggled offensively in the third set and EMU took a 2-1 lead.

The Golden Eagles turned the tables in the fourth set with the most lopsided set of the afternoon, 25-13. EMU cashed in on just eight-of-36 attack attempts and had seven attack errors for a .028 conversion rate.

In the fifth set, the Eagles never trailed and lead by as many as six points, 12-6, before ultimately winning by a pair. Crawshaw's kill clinched the match along with an undefeated weekend and a tournament title for the Eagles.

EMU heads back to the State of Michigan to take on Oakland University Tuesday, Sept. 11, in Rochester, Mich.
