Eagles Fall In Straight Sets To Central Michigan

9/27/2012 8:59:00 PM | Volleyball

EMU falls to 1-2 early in MAC season

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University Volleyball  team fell Thursday, September 27, to Central Michigan 3-0 (23-25, 23-25, 24-26) at CMU's McGuirk Arena.  The Eagles 11-8 overall, fell to 1-2 in the early MAC campaign, while Central improved to 8-6, and 2-1 in the MAC.

Eastern was led by senior Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Devine Child) with 14 kills, while Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville) added 10 as well for the Eagles.  Kim Hildreth supplied 37 assists to the Eagles attackers as she played most of the evening.  Defensively for the Eagles, Sierra Reed had 10 digs and Short and Megan Crawshaw (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan) each had four blocks.

Eastern opened the first set with a 3-0 run sparked by CMU attacking errors.   It was a back and forth affair from there, with Eastern Michigan leading 21-19, Central went on a 6-2 run to take the set, 25-23, as Central's Kaitlyn McIntyre finished off the Eagles with back-to-back  aces.   The Eagles outhit the Chippewas in the first set but couldn't take advantage of the eight attack errors by CMU.  Iaquaniello led the Eagles in game one with six kills, while Sierra Reed (Parker City, Ind.-Wapahani) added three defensive digs.

A late run by the Eagles wasn't enough, as EMU went down 0-2 after a second 25-23 defeat.  Junior Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy)  led the Eagles with five kills in the second set, after taking a show to the face early in the set.

After falling behind early in the third set, the Eagles battled back to tie it at 10-10 in the must win for EMU.   Leading 24-23, the Eagles saw an Iaquaniello attack fell inches behind the Chippewas' baseline to even the set.  After the Chippewas took the lead by one, a Central attack that looked to fall out of bounds, was called in and gave the Chipewas the match.

Offensively, paced the Chippewas with 47 assists, with 13 of those going to McIntyre to lead CMU, while Jenna Coates and Angelique White added 16 digs and six blocks to lead the Chippewas' defense respectively.

The Eagles will be back in action Saturday, September 29 in Athens, Ohio, as Eastern takes on MAC East Division foe, Ohio University at 7 PM.
