Eastern Hits the Road for a Pair of MAC Tilts

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michign University volleyball team continues the Mid-American Conference portion of the 2012 season Thursday, Sept. 27, when it travels to Mt. Pleasant, Mich. to take on the Central Michigan University Chippewas at 7 p.m.. The Eagles will then travel to Athens, Ohio to square off with the Ohio University Bobcats Saturday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m.

DOMINANT REBOUND WIN: The Eastern Michigan University volleyball squad was on a four match losing streak heading into the first weekend of the Mid-American Conference schedule last Friday. The Eagles fell in five sets to Western Michigan University, but rebounded nicely Saturday, Sept. 22, when they dominated the Northern Illinois Huskies. The Eagles dropped NIU in three sets en route to its first conference win of the 2012 campaign.

ALL-TIME AGAINST THIS WEEKEND'S FIELD: Eastern Michigan University and Central Michigan University have faced-off 74 times over the years. The Chippewas hold the edge over EMU, 52-22, in those matches.

The Chips and Eagles first met in 1976 during EMU's first year competing in varsity volleyball. Central swept EMU in that match, Oct. 9. Last year, the Eagles split a pair of matches with Central. In the series opener between EMU and CMU, the Green and White traveled to Mount Pleasant, Mich. and fell 2-3 on the road, Sept. 29. Eastern hosted the Chippewas, Nov. 3, where Central came into the Convocation Center and were defeated by the Eagles, 3-1.

EMU has taken on Ohio University 48 times, with NIU holding a 31-16-1 edge. EMU and the Huskies first squared-off in 1980 when Eastern swept the Bobcats, 2-0, Oct. 17. Last season, the Eagles and Bobcats met once in Ypsilanti, Mich., when Eastern fell in straight sets to Ohio, Oct. 1.

IAQUANIELLO NAMED 2012 SENIOR CLASS AWARD CANDIDATE: Eastern Michigan University senior outside hitter, Rachel Iaquaniello, was named as one-of-30 NCAA® women's volleyball student-athletes who excel both on and off the court that were selected as candidates today, Sept. 20, for the 2012 Senior CLASS Award® in collegiate volleyball. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. The complete list of candidates follows this release.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

The 2012 candidate class includes 16 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Americans from last season. Twenty-four of the 30 candidates have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better. One of the candidates was recognized by the College Sports Information Directors of America as a 2011 Capital One Academic All-American. The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2012 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship, which will take place December 13 and 15 in Louisville, Kentucky.

HITTING THE ROAD: After opening the Mid-American Conference portion of the schedule last weekend, the Eagles will be on the road for four straight matches. Eastern first travels to Central Michigan, Sept. 27, and Ohio, Sept. 29.

The Green and White will then head to Toledo, Oct. 5, and Ball State, Oct. 6, before returning home the weekend of Oct. 12-13. The Eagles will face Bowling Green, Oct. 12, before welcoming Miami to the Convocation Center, Oct. 13.

SCOUTING THE CHIPPEWAS: The Chippewas were selected to finish third in the Mid-American Conference West Division. Central is 7-6 on the season and 1-1 in conference matches. CMU leads the conference in opponent attack percentage this season. The Chippewas' opponents are hitting just .169 on the season, whic is .003 points better than Ball State which holds a .172 opponent attack percentage.

For CMU, Kaitlyn McIntyre was named to the preseason All-MAC team. McIntyre is leading the Chippewas in kills (3.65 k/s) this season, which ranks fifth in the conference. Kelly Maxwell is tied for second in the conference in assists this season, she is averaging 11.27 assists per set.Defensively, the Chippewas' libero, Jenna Coates, is leading the conference in digs, averaging 5.21 per set.

SCOUTING THE BOBCATS: After being picked to win the Mid-American Conference East Division, the Ohio Bobcats have started the 2012 campaign 6-8, with a 1-1 conference record. The Bobcats have been exceptional at the net on both sides to start the season. They hold a .218 team attack percentage which is fourth in the MAC, while holding opponents to a .187 clip, also good for fourth. Ohio leads the conference in blocks, averaging 2.66 per set.

Serena Warner has turned in an excellent start to the season posting the second-best attack percentage in the conference at .366, while she has also been a force defensively, averaging 1.27 blocks per set, good for second in the MAC.

Offensively, Kelly Lamberti has been the catalyst for the Bobcats averaging 3.81 kills per set, good for fourth in the conference and 0.40 aces per set which is third-best in the MAC.

AMONG THE NATIONAL RANKS: Eagles' senior, Rachel Iaquaniello, is tied for 50th in the NCAA for the most kills per set. The Plymouth, Mich. native is averaging 4.00 kills per set which is tied with Kara Bates of Ball State and Katty Workman of Boston College for the 50th best mark nationally.

As a team, the Green and White rank 48th nationally in digs per set with 16.52. Penn leads the nation in digs, averaging 21.88 per set, while Western Michigan leads the MAC with 17.73 (14th nationally).

MORE RECORDS TO BREAK: Eastern Michigan senior, Rachel Iaquaniello, has already set multiple records in her career at EMU but she has a few more in her sights. The Plymouth, Mich. native has 1,111 career digs, which ranks 13th all-time at Eastern. It's the career-sets-played record that Iaquaniello can reach soon this season. She currently has played 451 sets in her career, and 506 is the record held by 2011 senior, Ashley Mason.

LEADING THE MAC IN...: Eastern has been near the top of the conference in multiple categories both as a team and individually, but the Eagles .611 winning percentage is the best in the MAC with Ball State coming in second at .600. Despite having the best overall winning percentage in the conference, Ball State leads the West Division with a perfect 2-0 record, while Bowling Green leads the East Division

As a team, the Green and White is fourth in the conference in aces per set. As of Sept. 24, EMU is averaging 1.21 aces per set which trails just Buffalo (1.45), Akron (1.40) and Bowling Green (1.34). The Eagles are also fourth in digs per set, with the Green and White is posting 16.52 digs while Western Michigan leads at 17.73.

Individually, Eastern has a few student-athletes showing off their skill on the hardwood. Rachel Iaquaniello is tied for second the MAC in kills at 4.00 per set, she is trailing Paige Penrod of Bolwing Green (4.13). Megan Crawshaw is third in the MAC for blocking, averaging 1.03 blocks per set, while Sierra Reed is eighth in digs per set, with 4.06.
