EMU Falls to Blue Devils in Four Sets at Coke/Michigan Invite

Eagles take first set, but fall in four to Duke
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team dropped its second straight match at the Coke/Michigan Invitational Friday, Sept. 14. The Eagles fell to the Duke Blue Devils in four sets (25-14, 23-25, 21-25, 25-27).
The Green and White fell to 10-5 on the year, while Duke moved to 9-2.
Despite four Eagles posting double-figure kills, EMU dropped the match in four sets. Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) with 15 kills and 11 digs for her eighth double-double. Megan Crawshaw (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan) and Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) notched 13 kills apiece. Crawshaw posted a .455 attack percentage (13-3-22), while Baker had a .440 (13-2-25). Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville) posted a .364 hitting percentage (11-3-22). Kim Hildreth (Novi, Mich.-Novi) posted a career-high 46 assists in the loss. Crawshaw was also able to pick up four block assists.
The Green and White was able to take the opening set easily, 25-14, holding the Blue Devils to a -.037 attack percentage (7-8-27). The Eagles hit .296 (13-5-27) with Iaquaniello notching five kills and Baker with three on four attempts. Hildreth setup the offense with 11 assists in the opening frame.
Despite outhitting Duke .220 (14-5-41) to .214 (16-7-42) in the second set, the Eagles fell in the second set, 25-23. Crawshaw and Iaquaniello each had four kills, and Hildreth added nine more assists to her total, while notching a pair of kills.
Eastern fell behind 2-1 after dropping the third set, 25-21. Crawshaw added four more kills, while Baker, Iaquaniello and Short posted three apiece. Hildreth notched 11 more assists. EMU could not get its offense going as a team hitting just .100 (13-8-50).
The fourth set went into extra points but the Blue Devils topped Eastern, 27-25. Hildreth posted 15 assists in the set. Crawshaw went a perfect three-of-three hitting, while Baker and Short notched five kills apiece, hitting over .400 in the fourth and final set of the match.
The Eagles conclude their action at the Coke/Michigan Invitational Saturday, Sept. 15, when they square-off with Western Kentucky University. Eastern and WKU hit the floor at 4 p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena.
