Eastern moved to 3-0 after topping the Governors in straight sets

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team topped the Austin Peay University Governors Saturday, Aug. 25, in straight sets at the Memphis Invitational. With the victory, EMU remains perfect at the tournament. Eastern took the first set 26-24 and the final two sets 25-18.

The Eagles are now 3-0 on the season while Austin Peay falls to 1-2.

Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) led Eastern with a double-double performance. The senior notched 13 kills with a .357 attack percentage, while picking up 12 digs. Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) racked up 10 kills for the Green and White, while Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) banged home nine. Kim Hildreth (Novi, Mich.-Novi) and Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville) each contributed six kills and Hildreth led the match with 39 assists. As a team the Eagles hit .300 (48-12-120) for the match.

Defensively, the Green and White had its highest block total of the season with eight total team blocks, Megan Crawshaw (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan) leading with six block assists. Short added five block assists and Sierra Reed (Parker City, Ind.-Wapahani) had a match-high 15 digs.

The Eagles took the opening set 26-24 on the back of Baker and Iaquaniello's four kills apiece. Eastern's blocking scheme proved problematic for the Governors as the Green and White had half of its eight total blocks in the opening frame to help them to a 1-0 lead.

Baker and Iaquaniello led the way yet again in the second set with four and six kills, respectively. Each hit about .500 in the frame as Baker posted a .571 (4-0-7) and Iaquaniello hit .545 (6-0-11). EMU held Austin Peay to a .163 attack percentage en route to the 25-18 second set win.

The Green and White took the third and final set 25-18, using Roback's six kills in the set. Roback posted a .750 (6-0-8) attack percentage and as a squad, the Eagles hit .417 (18-3-36) in the frame, while holding the Governors to just a .222 (12-4-36) hitting percentage.

Eastern finishes up its Memphis Invitational schedule Saturday evening when it takes on the host school University of Memphis at 5 p.m. (CST). The Eagles look to be the only undefeated team in the tournament with a win against the Tigers.
