Eastern went 4-0 in Memphis and Iaquaniello was named Most Outstanding Player

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team finished a sweep of its four matches at the Memphis Invitational this weekend. The Eagles completed the sweep with a straight set win against the host University of Memphis Saturday, Aug. 25, 25-16, 26-24 and 25-17.

With the victory, Eastern keeps an unblemished record after its first weekend of competition moving to 4-0, while the Tigers fell to 0-4 on the season.

In terms of All-Tournament honors, Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player after totaling 55 kills in four matches with a .254 attack percentage. Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) was named to the All-Tournament team after posting a .386 attack percentage and averaging 3.07 kills per set in the invitational.

Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) paced the Eagles with a double-double totaling 11 kills and 13 digs. Megan Crawshaw (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan) was the other offensive juggernaut for EMU with 10 kills, while Baker added nine and Iaquaniello and Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville) contributed eight kills apiece. Kim Hildreth (Novi, Mich.-Novi) was the led the match with 35 assists.

Iaquaniello was the offensive catalyst in the opening frame, posting a .833 (5-0-6) attack percentage, while Baker notched four kills of her own. Crawshaw went three-of-four in attack attempts and as a team EMU hit .412 (16-2-34) en route to the 25-16 set victory, giving the Eagles the 1-0 advantage.

Despite struggling a bit offensively in the second set, the Green and White was able to hold off the Tigers and earn a 26-24 second set win. Roback's .600 (6-0-10) attack percentage led Eastern, while Crawshaw added five kills and Short knocked down four of her own.

It was EMU's defense that won the third set, holding Memphis to just a .081 (9-6-37) hitting percentage in the final frame. A quartet of Eagles had a pair of kills in the final set, while Roback's three were the most of any player donning the Green and White. Eastern was able to take the final set by a tally of 25-17.

The Eagles are off just a few days until they play host to the Cleveland State Vikings, Tuesday, Aug. 28, at the Convocation Center. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. and EMU looks to hold its perfect record heading into the second tournament on the schedule next weekend.
