Three Eagles Named NGCA All-American Scholar Recipients

Crossan, Fairbairn and Kwon earn prominent academic recognition

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Three Eastern Michigan University women's golfers were named to the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) All-American Scholar Teams for Division I, as announced by the organization Friday, July 6. Among the 585 women's collegiate golfers recognized with this prestigious honor were EMU's Corey Crossan (London, Ontario, Canada-Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School), Meredith Fairbairn (Orangeville, Ontario, Canada-Westside Secondary School) and Alyssa Kwon (Richmond Hills, Ontario, Canada-Richmond) .

A total of 585 women's collegiate golfers from Divisions I, II and III were recognized by the National Golf Coaches Association with this prestigious honor. The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50 and student-athletes must have competed in at least 50 percent (Division I) or 66 percent (Division II & III) of the college's regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.

Crossan, who boasts a 3.56 GPA as an exercise science major,  earned her first NGCA recognition following her sophomore season as an Eagle. In 23 rounds, she averaged 80.1 strokes per round, good for 30th best in the Mid-American Conference. Crossan finished in the top 20 in two events, a a tie for 11th at the Indiana Invitational with an 18-hole total of 76 and a 14th place finish at the Red Rocks Invitational with a 154 (78-76)

Fairbairn, a 2012 Academic All-MAC selection with a 3.92 GPA in exercise science, averaged 77.8 strokes per round, good for 12th best in the conference. She finished with the 18th lowest single-season average in school-history after finishing in the top 10 in three events, including a runner up finish at the Red Rocks Invitational with a 150 (71-71). The Orangeville, Ontario, Canada  native placed fourth at the Pat Bradely Invitational with a 54-hole total of 220 (72-73-75) and finished in  sixth place at the Hoya Invitational with a 234 (83-75-76). She fired a season-low round of 71 in the final round of the Red Rocks Invitational, and had three rounds of par-or-better. Named the MAC's Golfer of the Week for the period ending Oct. 26, Fairbairn was ranked 518th according to the Golfweek/Sagarin system.

Kwon, who holds a 3.78 GPA as an exercise science major, averaged 78.2 strokes per round, good for 15th best in the conference. She finished in the top 20 in four events, including an eighth place finish at the Pat Bradley Invitational with a 223 (74-72-77). She also tied for 12th at The MAC Fall Preview with a 36-hole total of 154 (74-80) and finished in 16th place at the Hoya Invitational with a 241 (81-82-78).

It was another magical 2011-12 campaign for the EMU women's golf team, as the Eagles finished with the best four-player team scoring average in school-history. Seventh-year Head Coach Sandy Wagner's crew recorded an averaged of 305.74, bettering the mark of 306.87 set by the 2009-10 squad. The mark is 18.94 strokes per 18 holes (305.74 to 324.68) better than when Wagner arrived on the Ypsilanti campus. Additionally, the total ranked second in the Mid-American Conference only behind Kent State University's average of 302.67.

A relatively young squad, with just one senior and four sophomores, the Eagles placed three golfers in the top 15 of the individual standings and finished in fourth place in the final standings at the 14th Annual Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championship held at the Hawthorns Golf and Country Club in Fishers, Ind., April 27-29. It marked the sixth consecutive year that the Eagles had finished in the top four of the team standings at the MAC Championship with a 54-hole score of 951 (310-325-316).
