Re-Listen to the Game

AVON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)— A historic outing for Eastern Michigan University starting pitcher Steve Weber (7-5) ended in disappointment as the Green and White fell, 2-1, to Miami University, in 10 innings in round two of the Mid-American Conference Baseball Tournament at All-Pro Freight Stadium Thursday, May 24. Weber pitched the entire 10 innings for the Eagles, but wound up taking a tough-luck loss.

The No. 6 Eagles (25-30) are still alive in the double-elimination tournament, but will now have a rematch with Central Michigan University, Friday, May 25, at 12:30 p.m. EMU already defeated CMU, 4-3, in the opening round on Wednesday. No. 7 Miami (30-27) punched its ticket to the semifinals and will await the winner of the EMU/CMU game for the right to advance to the championship.

Weber's outing spanned 10 complete innings which tied a MAC Tournament record for innings pitched in a game. Brian Lynch of Ball State University was the only other pitcher to accomplish the feat at the postseason event which began in 1981. The North Royalton, Ohio native became the first EMU pitcher since Jeff Fischer in 2006 to toss a complete game in a tournament game. Ironically, Fischer also lost that game by a 2-1 score to Kent State University.

A junior right hander standing 6-foot-6 tall, Weber allowed two earned runs on nine hits with two walks and five strikeouts. He is now 1-2 for his career in postseason play and has a pair of quality starts.

As dominant as Weber was on the hill, the EMU offense was equally as powerless against Miami starter Mac Thoreson (7-3), who pitched nine innings while allowing just two hits. He did not surrender an earned run en route to his second win against the Eagles this season.

Ben Magsig singled and scored in the first inning to get the Eagles off to a 1-0 lead. That advantage held until the sixth, when Kevin Bower crossed home plate to tie the score. The pitching duel continued until the 10th inning, when Ryan Curl scored on a Bower RBI single. Matt Rosinski stymied the Eagles in the final inning to record his 10th save of the season.

Magsig (1-for-3) and Lee Longo (1-for-3) were the only Eagles to record hits on the evening, with Magsig also drawing a walk. Sam Ott (0-for-4) notched an RBI on a first-inning, bases-loaded groundout.

For the RedHawks, Bryce Redeker went 2-for-4 and Max Andresen was 2-for-5. Bower (1-for-3) and Dan Walsh (1-for-4) had the RBI for MU.

Miami posted a scoring threat in the first as Bower walked and Redeker was hit by a pitch with two out. Weber then fanned Andresen for strike three to end the inning.

Magsig led off the EMU first with a single off the shin of Thoreson. Brent Ohrman then reached on a fielding error and Hitt was plunked by a Thoreson offering to load the bases with one out. An Ott groundout brought Magsig home from third and gave the Eagles an early 1-0 lead.

In the top of the third, Miami put runners on the corners after Jamie Simpson dropped a fly ball in right field, but Redeker bounced into a force out to preserve the EMU lead.

A pitcher's duel ensued as Thoreson had given up just one hit and Weber three through five complete innings. Slappey singled to lead off the fifth, but could only get as far as second base on a sacrifice bunt as Weber made quick work of Brenner and Honchel for the final outs.

MU tied the contest, 1-1, in the sixth, but Eastern limited the damage as the RedHawks loaded the bases as Bower led off with a walk and Redeker and Andresen recorded back-to-back singles to fill the bases. Then Crummy fouled off five straight pitches before Weber rung him up on a swinging third strike. After Walsh grounded out and brought Bower in to score, Slappey lined out and Weber successfully escaped further damage.

EMU broke through for their first hit since the opening frame when Longo drilled a shot into left field to lead off the seventh. Dae Bowden pinch ran for Longo to put some added speed on the base paths, but he was unable to advance as Simpson grounded into a 6-4-3 double play.

Nearing 100 pitches, Weber showed no sign of fatigue in the seventh and eighth as he sent Miami down in order on both occasions with a strikeout to cap off the eighth.

In the bottom of the eighth, Magsig reached base for a second time with a walk. He advanced into scoring position on a groundout, but was not brought home as Ohrman also bounced out.

Weber again made quick work of the Miami offense in the ninth, retiring the side in order for a third straight time. Thoreson did the same to the EMU lineup in the bottom portion to send the game into extra innings.

With Weber still on the hill, Curl registered a one-out single and moved into scoring position on a groundout. Bower then stepped up and hit the first pitch he saw up the right side of the infield. A diving Kyle Klein was unable to corral the ball, which ricocheted into right field and allowed Curl to score the go-ahead tally.

EMU's bid for a comeback fell short in the bottom of the 10th as Rosinski struck out two and John Rubino flied out to end the game.
