Re-Listen to the Game

AVON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University baseball team headed into the ninth inning tied with Central Michigan University, but Nate Theunissen notched a two-run, walk-off home run to earn the Chippewas a 6-4 victory and eliminate the Eagles from the Mid-American Conference Tournament Friday, May 25, at All-Pro Freight Stadium. The No. 6-seeded Eagles ended their season with a 25-31 overall record and a 1-2 mark at the MAC Tournament.

The Green and White led the contest, 4-2, heading into the bottom of the seventh, but the Chippewas (32-28) tied the game with consecutive solo shots. Theunissen's blast in the ninth was his second of the game and the fourth of the afternoon for CMU.

Eastern Michigan pitchers recorded nine strikeouts in the game to push their season total to 389. That strikeout total surpassed the 2010 squad's mark of 387 for the best single-season total in program history. Starting pitcher Collin Taylor was responsible for punching out six CMU batters in his final collegiate appearance. Also in his last game as an Eagle, Jordan Glover converted two strikeouts, while Joe Battistelli (3-7) recorded one.

Battistelli also took the loss in 1.1 innings of work over which he gave up two runs on three hits. Taylor departed after five innings and was in line for the win at the time. He ended up taking a no-decision and finished with a final line of two runs, four hits, five walks and six strikeouts.

Offensively, EMU tallied six hits with Brent Ohrman leading the way at 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, a run scored and a walk. Ohrman capped off his stellar EMU career third all-time in at-bats (772), fourth in hits (234), eight in runs scored (149) and 12th in stolen bases (53). His .344 batting average this season led the team and was good for the eighth-best clip by an EMU player in a year.

Ben Magsig went 1-for-3 with a run scored and two walks, which pushed his season total to 53 free passes. That walk total earned him the best single-season amount in EMU history, surpassing Danny Schmitz 's 52 in 1976. The Okemos, Mich. native finished his career with 120 walks, good for the fourth-best in EMU annals.

Sam Ott drove in two runs with a double on a 1-for-4 afternoon. The redshirt sophomore finished the tournament with three RBI to tie Ohrman for the team lead in Avon. Lee Longo (1-for-5) and Daniel Russell (1-for-4) had the other two hits for the Eagles.

Dietrich Enns tossed 8.1 innings for the Chippewas, but gave way to Jon Weaver (3-3), who ended up the winner after pitching the final two-thirds of an inning. Enns was charged with two earned runs on six strikeouts and five walks.

Theunissen hit homers six and seven of the season and went 2-for-5 with three RBI. William Arnold (2-for-3) and Jordan Adams (2-for-4) had the other round-trippers for Central Michigan.

Hall opened the scoring for Central Michigan in the first inning on an RBI single by Arnold. CMU looked to make it 2-0 when Adams singled to left field, but Arnold took too wide of a turn at third base and was caught in a rundown for the final out.

Tucker Rubino reached base to lead off the fourth on an error by second baseman Pat MacKenzie. Ohrman then chimed in with EMU's first hit of the day—a double—to put runners at second and third. Ott roped a double down the right field line to plate both runners and propel the Eagles into the lead, 2-1.

With two out, Russell hit a bounding ball to short. Jordan Dean short-hopped the throw which was mishandled by Adams at first base. The misplay allowed Ott to break for home plate. Unfortunately, Adams' throw to the dish was in time to nab Ott for the final out.

It did not take long for CMU to tie the score as Adams smacked a 1-0 offering from Taylor over the centerfield wall to begin the bottom of the fourth. Taylor ended the inning with his fifth strikeout of the afternoon on a 1-2 slider to Hall.

The Chippewas defense helped the Eagles back into the lead, 3-2, after a pair of defensive miscues in the sixth. After Longo's leadoff single, Russell reached on an error with two outs. Jamie Simpson then skied a popup over the infield which should have been the third out, but three CMU fielders converged and allowed the ball to drop. That mishap allowed Longo to score from second base.

Ohrman's one-out single in the seventh extended EMU's edge further to 4-2. Magsig scored on Ohrman's knock after working his fifth walk of the tournament. CMU needed just two swings of the bat in their half of the seventh to tie the game as Arnold and Theunissen hit back-to-back homers off of Glover to make it a 4-4 score.

In the ninth, Magsig scooted into scoring position with his first double of the tournament up the left-center power alley. Magsig's two bagger chased Enns from the mound and brought on Weaver. Weaver struck Rubino out and intentionally walked Ohrman to get to Longo. Longo battled Weaver in a seven-pitch at-bat, but was ultimately caught looking at strike three on the outside corner.

Dean started off the bottom of the ninth with a chopper over the head of Magsig which hit fair just inside the left field line. The CMU shortstop made it all the way to second to put the winning run in scoring position with nobody out. EMU caught a break when Arnold's sacrifice bunt attempt rolled quickly to Battistelli, who tossed to Magsig to catch Dean on his way to third.

But that is where Eastern Michigan's good fortune ran out, as Theunissen stepped up and hit CMU's fourth long ball of the game to send the Chippewas to the 6-4 walk-off win.
