EMU's Five Run Lead Vanishes in 8-7 Loss to Kent State

Eagles finish non-conference schedule with 10-16 mark

Re-Listen to the Game

AVON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — A five-run lead with nine outs to make did not hold up Tuesday evening, May 15, as the Eastern Michigan University baseball team surrendered a 7-2 lead and lost on a walk-off sacrifice fly to Kent State University, 8-7, at All-Pro Freight Stadium. The Eagles (24-26) dropped their final non-conference game of the season to the Golden Flashes (34-17), who hold the No. 1 seed headed into the Mid-American Conference Tournament.

Eastern Michigan used a four-run seventh inning to charge ahead 7-2, but EMU pitching could not close the door on a potent Kent State offense which scored twice in the seventh, three times in the eighth and once in the ninth.

The Green and White finished its 2012 non-conference schedule with a 10-16 record and fell to 1-3 in neutral-site contests. In their last 13 outings against Kent State, the Eagles dropped to 3-10. All Pro Freight Stadium will serve as the site of the MAC Tournament, which will be held May 23-26.

Both pitching staffs combined to use 11 different pitchers in the contest, with EMU utilizing seven and KSU sending out five. Joe Battistelli (3-6) took the loss for the Eagles after giving up the winning run in the ninth. Josh Pierce (1-0) claimed his first victory of the season after tossing a scoreless final inning for the Golden Flashes.

Daniel Russell (2-for-4) and Tucker Rubino (2-for-5) led the way offensively for the Eagles and accounted for four of the team's nine hits. Jamie Simpson (1-for-2) had two RBI and joined Russell as the two EMU players to notch doubles on the evening. John Rubino also had a pair of RBI and scored a run.

Kent Stated churned out 11 hits and had two players turn in three-hit games: George Roberts (3-for-5) and Jimmy Rider (3-for-5). Rider also posted a four-RBI game and both Roberts and Rider had two-base hits.

The Golden Flashes wasted little time in taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning, as Jason Bagoly slapped a one-out single to centerfield and plated Nick Hamilton and Evan Campbell.

EMU negated that deficit quickly with a pair of tallies in the top of the second to tie the score, 2-2. Russell walked with one out and was followed by Lee Longo, who reached on a scorched line drive which was later ruled an error. Rubino (John) then delivered with a two-out single to center to bring both baserunners home.

The score remained tied until the fourth, when Eastern Michigan took its first lead of the evening when Adam Dennison's sacrifice fly scored Russell from third. Russell tucked a line drive down the right-field line earlier in the inning for his fifth double of the season.

Strong middle relief efforts from Paul Schaak and Brian Valente kept the Golden Flashes off the scoreboard in innings four through six. After allowing a leadoff walk in the fourth, a Schaak breaking ball induced a 4-6-3 double play off the bat of Tommy Monnot. He then struck out Alex Miklos to end the frame. Valente rebounded from giving up a leadoff double to record two straight strikeouts and a groundout in the sixth.

Eastern Michigan gave itself some breathing room in the seventh, scoring four times to take a 7-2 lead. The Eagles loaded the bases as the first three batters reached including Tucker Rubino, who bunted for an infield single. KSU pitcher Eric Dorsch balked to allow Rubino (John) to score the inning's first run. Following a Brent Ohrman walk, pinch hitter Simpson stepped up and drove in a pair on a double to centerfield. A Russell groundout completed the scoring as the Eagles took a five-run edge.

The situation became dicey for Taylor Dimmerling in the bottom of the seventh as Kent State put runners at second and third base with one out. A single by Rider scored both Derek Toadvine and Miklos to cut the EMU advantage to 7-4. After hitting his second batter of the inning, Dimmerling settled down and recorded the final two outs on a strikeout and groundout.

With one run already across in the eighth and its deficit down to 7-5, KSU had the tying runs in scoring position with two gone against EMU hurler Ben Dartnell. Rider got ahold of a 1-2 breaking and drilled it over the head of Ohrman in centerfield and cruised to a two-RBI double while knotting the game at seven apiece. Battistelli came on to get the Eagles out of a bases-loaded jam on a weak grounder back to the mound.

The Green and White put a runner at first thanks to a walk in its half of the ninth, but would come no closer to breaking the tie. Battistelli gave up a leadoff hit in the bottom of the ninth to Jeff Revesz. Pinch running for Revesz, Troy Summers advanced to second and then to third on a pair of wild pitches to put the winning run 90 feet from home. Toadvine's sacrifice fly to centerfield was deep enough to score a speedy Summers and send the Eagles back to Ypsilanti empty handed.

The Eagles will play their final MAC series of the 2012 season Thursday-Saturday, May 17-19, against the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio. EMU enters the weekend in third place in the West Division and two games behind UT for first place.
