Ohrman's bat catches fire in 6-for-6 outing
BUFFALO, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com)— The Eastern Michigan University baseball team officially punched its ticket to the 2012 Mid-American Conference Tournament Saturday, May 12, with an 11-7 victory over the University at Buffalo. The Eagles' top four batters combined for 13 of the squad's 17 hits and three-hole hitter Brent Ohrman went 6-for-6.
An Eastern Michigan (23-25; 13-10 MAC) win combined with Buffalo, Bowling Green State University and Northern Illinois University losses Saturday means the Eagles can finish no lower than eighth place in the MAC. The Green and White will appear in its seventh-consecutive conference tournament, which runs from May 23-26 in Avon, Ohio.
EMU led the game, 6-4, headed into the eighth inning when Ohrman tripled in a run and Matt Hitt used a sacrifice fly to make it 8-4. Buffalo (15-31; 8-14 MAC) answered with a pair of its own in the bottom half of that frame, but EMU added three more insurance markers in the ninth to put the Bulls away.
Starting pitcher Steve Weber (7-3) moved to 6-0 in his last seven starts with a solid 6.1-inning, four-run performance. Weber struck out five batters and walked three while giving up nine hits.
Of EMU's 17 hits, four were doubles and one was a triple. Ohrman finished the afternoon with a double and a triple for his ninth two-bagger and fifth three-base hit of the season. His triple added on to EMU's MAC-leading mark of 21. Ben Magsig (1-for-5), Sam Ott (3-for-4) and Lee Longo (1-for-4) posted the other two-base hits for the Green and White. Magsig now has 12 doubles this year, while Ott hit his team-leading 13th and Longo cranked his seventh.
Ohrman turned in the first six-hit game for an EMU player this season. It was good for the Adrian, Mich. native's 17th multiple-hit outing of 2012. He scored four runs and turned in two RBI and is now 8-for-10 in the series.
Ott joined Hitt (1-for-3) and Tucker Rubino (3-for-4) as the trio of Eagles to post three-RBI afternoons. Saturday marked the third occasion this season on which Ott and Hitt posted three RBI in a game, while Rubino did it for a second time. In addition, Rubino now has two-or-more hits in three of his last six outings.
For Buffalo, Jeff Thompson (2-3) worked just four innings on the hill before giving way to his bullpen. He allowed four earned runs on eight hits with a pair of walks and two strikeouts.
Offensively, the Bulls still proved formidable with a seven-run, 11-hit attack. After going 6-for-6 Friday, Jason Kanzler went 3-for-5 Saturday with three RBI. Dan Scahill (2-for-5) and Thomas Richards (2-for-4) also had multiple-hit games for UB.
EMU scored first with two runs in the opening at-bat. Ott singled across Rubino and Hitt grounded out to plate Ohrman. Buffalo halved that lead with a tally in the bottom of the inning on a leadoff homer by Matt Pollock.
After the two teams traded single runs in the third, Rubino used a sacrifice fly to bring Magsig home and increase the EMU lead to 4-2.
Rubino singled with one out in the sixth and was followed by an Ohrman double to put runners at second and third. Ott knocked both of them in with a single to right and gave EMU an 8-2 advantage. In the bottom of the inning, Buffalo cut its deficit to 8-4 when Jon Mestas hit an RBI double and River McWilliams came in to score on a sacrifice fly.
The Eastern Michigan offense perked up once again in the eighth as Ohrman's bat continued to sizzle with an RBI triple. Hitt then sacrificed Ohrman home to make it 10-4. The Eagles then responded to two runs by UB with three of their own in the top of the ninth. John Rubino and Bo Kinder each scored on a Rubino (Tucker) single and Magsig accounted for EMU's final run on an Ohrman knock.
UB scored a run in the ninth, but Jordan Glover ended the game on a double play.
The Eagles will go for their fifth MAC series victory of 2012 Sunday afternoon, May 13, beginning at 1 p.m.
