YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Senior Tucker Rubino (Scottsdale, Ariz.-Horizon-Glendale C.C.) delivered a bases-loaded single to bring in the winning run in the ninth inning to give the Eastern Michigan University baseball team a 5-4 victory over Hillsdale College Tuesday, May 1, here at Oestrike Stadium.
With two out in the ninth and a runner at second base, pitch hitter Austin Williams (Spring Hill, Kan.-Gardner Edgerton-Fort Scott C.C.) drew a six-pitch walk. A wild pitch and then another walk to Matt Hitt (Fishers, Ind.-Fishers-Kishwaukee College) loaded the bases for Rubino. After running the count full, the Scottsdale, Ariz. native roped the Michael Keve offering over the outstretched arms of the shortstop to score the go-ahead tally.
With the dramatic victory, EMU picked up its 20th victory of the season to run it record to 20-23 on the year. It marked the 20th consecutive season that the program has posted 20-or-more wins in a season. The last time EMU did not reach the 20-victory plateau was the 1992 campaign, when the Green and White finished with a 19-23 record. Meanwhile, the Chargers drop to 11-34 on the season.
The Eagles used seven pitchers during the contest with closer Joe Battistelli (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) picking up his third victory of the season after working the top of the ninth. On the flipside, Keve suffered his sixth loss of the year, after giving up three walks and the game-winning hit.
The Eagles notched just seven hits on the night and stranded 11 runners, while the Chargers finished with nine hits and seven left-on-base.
HC got on the board in the top of the first inning when Mike Blanhard scored from third on a single up the middle by Nolan Nunez. The RBI was the 10th of the season for the sophomore second baseman.
After going silently in the opening frame, the Eagles exploded for three runs on four hits in the second inning. Lee Longo (Mayfield, Ohio-Mayfield) singled and Bo Kinder (Wapella, Ill.-Clinton Community-Kaskaskia College) walked to give EMU its first scoring chance of the night. John Rubino (Scottsdale, Ariz.-Horizon) promptly followed with a single to bring in Long and knot the score at 1-all.
Senior Kyle Klein (Grand Rapids, Mich.-West Catholic) gave the Eagles their first lead of the contest at 3-1 by clearing the bases with a single to right field. It was just Klein's second hit of the season in 14 plate appearances.
With a light rain falling, the Chargers sliced the deficit in half in the third inning. Just one inning later, Hillsdale added two more runs in the fourth to recapture the advantage at 4-3. HC had the opportunity to balloon the lead more with the bases loaded and just one out However, Collin Taylor (Cincinnati, Ohio-Lakota West) was able to shut the door in relief with a popup on the infield and a strikeout to escape the jam.
EMU would knot the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh via back-to-back doubles by Dae Bowden (Chicago, Ill.-Whitney Young) and Brent Ohrman (Adrian, Mich.-Adrian).
Eastern Michigan returns to Mid-American Conference action Friday, May 4, against Bowling Green State University. The Eagles and Falcons will then tangle Saturday, May 5, at 3 p.m. before honoring the 2012 senior class Sunday, May 6, at 1 p.m. All three games will be broadcast for free on Eagle All-Access at EMUEagles.com/showcase.
