EMU allows eight unearned runs on four errors this afternoon
OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — A poor defensive showing did not help the Eastern Michigan University softball team against Mid-American Conference opponent Miami University this afternoon, April 22, as they contributed to eight unearned runs in the Eagles 10-0 loss on the road. The Green and White fall to 19-28 on the season and stumble to 5-11 in MAC contests, while Miami improves to 28-16 (9-5 MAC).
Despite nearly matching the RedHawks' eight hits with six of their own in the contest, the Eagles' defense committed four errors that proved costly for the Green and White.
Jenna Ignowski gave up eight hits in the game and allowed just two earned runs in 4.0 innings of work to fall to 10-8 on the season.
Offensively, six members of the Green and White tallied a hit in the contest, as Jessica Richards, Katy Blaharski, McKenna Russ, Courtney Nicholson and Courtney Loe each collected a single apiece.
The RedHawks took full advantage of two EMU errors in the first and scattered five hits to build a considerable eight-run lead.
Russ singled to start the Eagles' second inning in an attempt to help her squad chip away at their deficit, but Miami's Jessica Simpson struck out the remainder of the side to move play into the bottom of the frame.
Another EMU error in the third loaded the bases with two outs for Miami, which eventually led to another two runs for the RedHawks after Taylor Rice connected on a pinch hit single through the left side and increase Miami's lead by 10.
The damage was too great to overcome for the Eagles, however, as the Green and White could not recover and suffered the 10-0 loss in five innings.
EMU will look to bounce back when it hosts Akron on Friday, April 27 to start the Eagles' final home stand of the 2012 campaign at Varsity Field. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
