Eagles fall in final regular-season dual to finish 5-3 in the MAC
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Head Coach Ryan Ray's Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team finished the 2011-12 regular season with a disappointing 4-3 dual-match loss to the Western Michigan University Broncos here Saturday, April 21, in a Mid-American Conference dual match played on the Chippewa Racket Club outdoor courts.
The loss leaves the Eagles with a 9-14 overall record and a 5-3 MAC mark, tying Western Michigan for third in the final standings. WMU improves to 16-10 overall and 5-3 in league action.
The setback also spoiled Senior Day for three EMU players, Georgia de-Lisle-Tarr, Marcela Rivero and Miriam Westerink.
Eastern opened the match by dropping all three doubles contests, before rallying to split the six singles matches.
Nino Mebuke started the singles action with a win over Western's Nini Sujashvili, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 singles.
Rivero, playing at No. 6, dropped a 6-2, 6-2, decision to WMU's Jill Pastunink in the second singles to be completed and Western's Kathleen Hawkins then handed Daphne Friedrichs a 6-3, 6-1 setback at No. 4 singles.
Western's Maria Nivia posted a 6-4, 7-6 (3) win over Eastern's Ankita Bhatia at No. 3 singles before the Eagles came back to record two three-set wins, with Westerink closing out Maggie Remynse, 2-6, 7-5, 6-0, at No. 2 singles while Mariya Toncheva defeated Western's Caroline Aleck, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, at No. 5 singles, the day's final match to be completed.
Both teams will now head to DeKalb, Ill. to play in the MAC Championships, April 27-29.
