Eagles drop 4-0 decision to Falcons in first round
DeKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) — Head Coach Ryan Ray's Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team saw its chance at a Mid-American Conference Tournament championship end abruptly here Friday, April 27, as the Eagles dropped a 4-0 decision to the Bowling Green State University Falcons in the first round in a match played on the DeKalb High School courts.
The Eagles, the No. 4 seed, started the match by losing the doubles point. Bowling Green's No. 2 doubles team of Katie Grubb and Maddy Eccleston handed the EMU team of Mariya Toncheva and Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr an 8-4 setback and then clinched the doubles point when Mary Hill and Jade Johnson defeated EMU's Daphne Friedrichs and Marcela Rivero, 8-0, at No. 3. Bowling Green, seeded 5th, quickly put an end to EMU's hopes, capturing the No. 3, No. 1 and No. 5 singles matches. The remaining three singles matches were adandoned without scores as the Falcons had the necessary four points.
BGSU's Reuland handed Ankita Bhatia a 6-1, 6-0 setback at No. 3 singles followed by Chiricosta's 6-3, 6-3 win over Mebuke at No. 2. Bowling Green's Grubb closed out the match with a 7-6 (3), 6-0 win over Toncheva, at No. 5.
