EMU to Host Back-to-Back Home Duals

Eagles close out home slate against BGSU and WMU

EAGLES PLAY FINAL TWO REGULAR-SEASON HOME DUALS: Head Coach Ryan Ray's Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team will close out the home portion of its 2011-12 schedule with two weekend Mid-American Conference dual matches.
Friday, April 20, the Eagles will host the Falcons of Bowling Green State University and Saturday, April 21, EMU will host Western Michigan. Both matches are slated for 1 p.m. starts and will be played outdoors, weather permitting, at the Chippewa Racket Club in Ypsilanti.
Eastern will take an 8-13 overall record and a 4-2 MAC mark into this weekend's twinbill.
Bowling Green is currently 8-8 overall and 3-3 in league action and Western Michigan is 13-10 overall and 2-3 in MAC play.
Last weekend, April 13-14, the Eagles split their two MAC duals.
Friday, April 13, the Eagles ran into one of the hottest teams in the league in the University of Akron Zips. The home squad posted a 6-1 win over the Eagles to go to 19-2 overall and 5-1 in MAC action.
The EMU doubles team of Miriam Westerink and Nino Mebuke started the Eagles off with a 9-7 win over Zara Harutunyan and Prang Pantusart at No. 1 doubles.
Akron would go on to capture the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3.
Senior Westerink was the lone Eagle to score a singles point as she won a grueling, 6-7 (1), 6-2, 10-8, victory over Akron's Olga Shkundina at No. 2 singles. The Zips closed out the win by winning the remaining five singles matches.
Eastern came back Saturday, April 14, to edge Buffalo, 4-3.
The Eagles won the doubles point to start with a 1-0 lead with the No. 1 team of Miriam Westerink and Nino Mebuke defeating Marta Stoyanova and Miranda Podlas, 8-3, followed by the No. 2 team of Mariya Toncheva and Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr producing an 8-1 win over Kira Golenko and Tamara Markovic.
Eastern then went on to split the singles action. Westerink defeated Marta Stoyanova, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 singles and at No. 4, EMU's Daphne Friedrichs fought hard for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Golenko.
EMU's Marcela Rivero secured the win with a 6-3, 7-6 (2) win over Buffalo's Anamaria Candanoza at No. 6 singles.
