Softball Soars Past Titans In Doubleheader Sweep

Eagles combine for 21 hits on the day

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University softball team's offense combined for 15 runs on 21 hits in its doubleheader sweep over visiting University of Detroit Mercy at Varsity Field today, April 17, taking game 8-0 through six innings and closing out game two, 7-1. EMU improves to 19-24 on the year, while Detroit falls to 10-30 overall.

The Green and White offense powered out 11 hits in game one, with four Eagles posting multiple-hit games. Jessica Richards collected three hits in the contest, while McKenna Russ went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Sarah Gerber and Jenn Lucas also picked up a pair of hits for the Eagles in the contest.

Jenna Ignowski improves to 10-6 on the year after throwing six shutout innings in the circle. The Niles, Mich. native fanned six on the day and allowed four hits while walking just one.

The entirety of the Eagles' lineup recorded at bats in the third, tallying six hits to break out to a seven run lead. Russ connected on a bases loaded single up the middle to plate the Green and White's first two runs with one out. After Gerber singled through the right side to again load the bases, Amanda Herron drew a walk to put EMU up three. Kaylee Tolliver earned both her RBI of the game in the following at bat with a double to right-center field, and Lucas pushed the Eagles ahead by six with an RBI-single to centerfield. Richards concluded the Green and White's scoring of the inning with her RBI-base knock to second base.

Throughout the next 2.5 innings, the score remained 7-0 in favor of the home team, but two Detroit miscues in the sixth allowed EMU to take game one in six innings.

Russ hit a one-out single and stole second base in the bottom of the sixth, representing the game-clinching run. Gerber reached first safely thanks to a throwing error, and Russ eventually headed home when Detroit misfired the throw back across the infield in an attempt to pick off Russ heading to third, giving EMU their eighth run and implementing the run-rule in six.

EMU's bats stayed lively in game two, hammering out 10 hits for seven runs. Courtney Nicholson went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate including a homerun and three RBI, while Nellie Coquillard and Gerber collected two hits apiece.

Lauren Wells (4-10) went the distance in her fourth complete game of the year. The lefty struck out five and allowed just one earned run in six innings of work.

Herron would put the Eagles on the board first with a solo shot in the bottom of the second inning. Nicholson later drove in Tolliver who reached on an error in a previous at bat to give the Green and White a 2-0 lead. Lucas then punched a single back up the middle, which was misplayed by Detroit's Alyssa Schaub in center. The miscue gave Nicholson time to wheel around and score, putting EMU up by three.

Gerber hit an RBI double in the third to increase her team's lead to four, but the Titans manufactured a run in their following at bat to set the score at 4-1.

EMU scored another run in the fourth with a Nicholson homerun, and the junior later drove in another in the fifth to help close out an eventual 7-1 win at home.

The Eagles continue its march through the 2012 schedule with a road trip to Ball State this Friday, April 20 in Muncie, Ind. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
