YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)— A nine-strikeout performance from Collin Taylor could not prevent the Eastern Michigan University baseball team from avoiding a 9-1 setback against Miami University Friday afternoon, March 23, at Oestrike Stadium. RedHawks' starter Mac Thoreson limited the EMU offense to just seven hits in the opening game of the 2012 Mid-American Conference season.
Taylor came on with two outs in the fifth and put on a show for the remaining four and one-third innings. The lefty from Cincinnati, Ohio fanned a career-high nine batters to shatter his previous record of six strikeouts in a single game. Taylor also issued no walks on the afternoon.
Eastern Michigan's (9-14; 0-1 MAC) starting pitcher Steve Weber (1-3) was touched up for seven earned runs and nine hits in three and a third innings. Jordan Glover was responsible for the other two scores in one and a third innings of work.
Sam Ott turned in his fifth multi-hit game of the season with a 2-for-3 performance. Jamie Simpson was 2-for-4 and Matt Hitt registered the Eagles' lone RBI on a groundout. At the top of the order, Daniel Russell was 0-for-3 but drew a pair of walks.
The RedHawks (13-9; 1-0 MAC) scored all nine of their runs in the first five innings and rode Thoreson (3-2) for seven and two-thirds innings. Thoreson threw 121 pitches and allowed only one earned run on seven hits. The Eagles drew four walks off of the right hander, but left 10 men on base for the game.
Batters one through four in the Miami lineup hit a combined 11-for-17 (.647) and accounted for six of the nine RedHawk RBI. Bryce Redeker knocked in three in a 3-for-3 afternoon at the dish, while Kevin Bower also brought in a trio of baserunners and hit 3-for-5.
Miami scored quickly with a pair of runs in the first inning, as Redeker and and Bower hit back-to-back doubles to drive in one apiece. The RedHawks loaded the bases in the third and added three more tallies that inning along with two in the fourth for a 7-0 lead.
EMU got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 7-1. Simpson beat out an infield single to start off the frame and eventually came around to score on a Hitt RBI groundout.
A blooper to left field off the bat of Redeker plated another pair of runs for Miami in the fifth to make it a 9-1 lead for the visitors.
After that, Taylor all but shut down the MU offense and struck out eight of the first 15 batters he faced. He finished the game having faced 18 batters while striking out the side in the seventh and eighth innings.
EMU's best chance to tack on some more runs came in the bottom of the fifth, when the Eagles put two runners on with one out. Lee Longo grounded into a double play and the threat was ended.
The Eagles and RedHawks will square off again Saturday, March 24, at 3 p.m. Be sure to check EMUEagles.com periodically in case weather forces the start time to be changed.
