EMU has no luck against the Fighting Irish
NOTRE DAME, Ind. (EMUEagles.com)— A six-run seventh inning for the University of Notre Dame turned a close two-run contest into an eight-run affair as the Fighting Irish topped Eastern Michigan University, 12-4, Tuesday evening, March 20. The Eagles came back from a 4-1 deficit in the fourth inning to tie the score, but were shut out the rest of the way.
Eastern Michigan's (6-13) three-game winning streak came to a close despite another 10-strikeout performance from the pitching staff. Paul Schaak (1-2) turned out to be the pitcher of record Tuesday, and allowed six runs (four earned) on five hits in two innings of work.
Each of the six EMU pitchers used in the game recorded at least one strikeout, with Ben Dartnell fanning three of the six batters he faced.
Matt Hitt played long ball for a second time this season and finished the game 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Tucker Rubino was 2-for-4 with a double, and Brent Ohrman went 1-for-2 with a triple, an RBI, a stolen base and a pair of walks.
The Eagles committed three errors in the game, which resulted in a trio of unearned runs for Notre Dame.
For the Fighting Irish, Breck Ashdown (1-0) was credited with the win after pitching a scoreless inning. Notre Dame pitchers racked up nine strikeouts on the evening.
The heart of the Notre Dame order proved troublesome for EMU pitchers, as batters two through five combined for 10 hits in 19 at bats (.526) along with nine RBI and nine runs scored. Three-hole hitter Eric Jagielo led the way with a 3-for-5 performance and a solo home run.
After Notre Dame took the lead, 2-0, in the first inning, the Eagles climbed back to within one in the top of the third on Ohrman's RBI triple. Steve Weber surrendered back-to-back run-scoring doubles in the bottom of that inning, allowing the Fighting Irish to take a 4-1 edge.
Hitt's homer to left field in the following frame was a two-run shot and brought EMU back to within a run, 4-3. In the fifth, Lee Longo's one-out sacrifice fly plated Bo Kinder to tie the game at four apiece.
Notre Dame answered with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth as Jagielo homered and Trey Mancini scored as Hitt attempted to gun down Joe Hudson trying to steal second.
EMU smelled blood in the top of the sixth as Austin Williams drew a two-out walk to load the bases for Kinder. Ashdown came in to pitch for Ryan Richter and recorded the inning-ending strikeout to keep it a 6-4 game for Notre Dame.
Things fell apart for the Eagles in the seventh as the Fighting Irish struck for six runs and five hits to take a commanding 12-4 lead.
The Eagles will now return home to open their 2012 Mid-American Conference slate against East Division foe Miami University Friday-Sunday, March 23-25, at Oestrike Stadium. The Green and White is a perfect 3-0 in Ypsilanti so far this season.
