EMU completes season-opening road trip with 3-12 mark
Box Score.
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (EMUEagles.com)— The Eastern Michigan University baseball team closed out its season-opening road trip Wednesday, March 14, with a disappointing 2-1 loss to West Virginia University. The Eagles' pitching staff held the Mountaineers to just five hits, but a sloppy sixth inning cost the Green and White in its final tune up before Friday's home opener at Oestrike Stadium.
Eastern Michigan (3-12) scored its only run in the second inning when Tucker Rubino scored on a balk. The Mountaineers (7-10) took the lead in the sixth with a pair of runs and also benefited from a balk and a costly EMU throwing error. In the ninth, the Eagles put runners on the corners with two outs, but Bo Kinder struck out looking to end the game.
The Eagles have now dropped seven games in-a-row and fell to 1-4 in games decided by a single run.
Starting pitcher Neil Butara tossed just one inning for the Eagles and was one of five hurlers used by Head Coach Jay Alexander Wednesday. EMU pitchers combined for the squad's second-best performance of the season, giving up just two runs (one earned) on five hits. Paul Schaak (0-1) was saddled with the tough-luck loss, but pitched a solid four and one-thirds innings while recording a strikeout and a walk.
Jamie Simpson made the most of his fourth start of the season, leading the Eagles at the plate with a 3-for-4 effort which included a double in his first plate appearance. Rubino was 1-for-3 and represented EMU's lone run, while Sam Ott connected for his second triple in as many contests.
For West Virginia, Dan Dierdorff (3-0) surrendered nine hits, but lasted until the game's final out when Ryan Tezak was called in to close the game for the Mountaineers. Dierdorff struck out five and walked three EMU hitters.
At the dish, Matt Frazer and Brady Wilson each recorded two-hit outings, with Gabe Brown tallying the only other base-knock for WVU in the game.
Until the sixth inning, the pitching combination of Butara, Ryan Lavoie and Schaak allowed only four West Virginia baserunners and sent the Mountaineers down in order in second and fifth innings.
The Green and White scored the game's first tally in the second inning after Rubino and Simpson went back-to-back with a single and double, respectively, to put runners at second and third with one out. Dierdorff's balk allowed Rubino to come home while bumping Simpson up to third base.
Kinder then led off the third inning with a single, but was nabbed trying to steal his second base of the year. Ott and Lee Longo each notched two-out hits, but Ben Magsig fell victim to a strikeout and the score remained 1-0 in favor of the Eagles.
A series of mental lapses then plagued Eastern Michigan in the sixth inning and resulted in 2-1 lead for the Mountaineers. After Wilson was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame, Bobby Boyd reached base on a throwing error by Schaak and advanced to second base as a result. Schaak then balked, allowing Wilson to score and tie the game at one. Brown put WVU in the lead with a sacrifice fly to right field.
In the ninth, EMU placed the tying run at third base and the go-ahead run at first when John Rubino followed Simpson with a two-out single. Tezak, who replaced Dierdorff following Rubino's hit, recorded the final out and ended the game at a score of 2-1 for the home team.
The Eagles will now return home to play the opening series of 2012 at Oestrike Stadium Friday-Sunday, March 16-18. Friday's and Saturday's contests are each set for 3 p.m., while Sunday's game begins at 1 p.m.
