Four errors hurt Eagles in road loss to Knights
Box Score.
ORLANDO, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University softball team came up on the losing end of an 8-6 decision to the University of Central Florida this evening, Feb. 28, at the UCF Softball Complex in Orlando, Fla.
Despite matching the Knight's seven hits, four errors plagued the Green and White defensively and attributed to three unearned runs in the contest.
Six Eagles notched hits this evening, with Jessica Richards leading her team with a 2-for-4 performance and two runs scored.
UCF pitching woes in the top of the first helped the EMU offense jump to an early lead. Richards singled to start the frame and advanced to second on a throwing error. She would later score on a passed ball walked Blaharski. Blaharski then made her way to third on another UCF pitch that found its way to the backstop and eventually scored thanks to a Sarah Gerber hit to right. A two-run double by Nellie Coquillard closed out the top of the frame with an EMU 4-0 lead.
The Knights responded with two runs in the bottom of the first, but the Eagles matched UCF with another two in the following inning of play. With a runner on first and one out, McKenna Russ blasted her first home run of the season over the right field fence to extend her team's lead to 6-2.
EMU defensive woes in the Knights' following at bat erased the Eagles' previous offensive efforts as they tallied five runs to gain control of the lead.
From there, the Eagles bats cooled and scattered just two hits in the remaining innings of play, allowing the Knights to secure an eventual 8-6 victory.
Lindsay Rich inherits the loss and falls to 0-1 on the season. The freshman hurler threw 4.2 innings, striking out three while holding the Knights to one earned run on four hits.
The Green and White will return to action tomorrow, Feb. 29, when they head to Jacksonville University for two games. The doubleheader is slated for a 5 p.m. start.
