EAGLES CLOSE OUT REGULAR SEASON WITH TWO HOME TILTS: The 2011-12 Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team will swing back into Mid-American Conference play with two home West Division games this week.
EMU will host Northern Illinois Wednesday, Feb. 22, followed by a Saturday, Feb. 25, home game against Ball State. Those two contests in the Convocation Center will close out the 2011-12 regular-season home schedule.
Eastern is currently 11-16 overall and 6-6 in MAC action after dropping a 54-49 non-conference Sears BracketBuster game at Green Bay Saturday, Feb. 18.
Northern Illinois enters Wednesday's game with a 3-22 overall record and a 2-10 MAC mark.

STILL LEADING THE WEST DIVISION:  EMU has continued its lock on first place in the Mid-American Conference West Division after splitting its last two league encounters. The Eagles dropped a close 55-52 decision at Central Michigan, Feb. 14, but managed a 68-55 home win over Ohio, Feb. 11.  EMU leads the West at 6-6 followed by Western Michigan at 5-7, Ball State and Toledo 4-8, CMU 3-9 and NIU 2-10.

THE LAST TIME:  EMU recorded a 47-40 win at Northern Illinois, Jan. 7,  in the 2011-12 Mid-American Conference opener for both clubs.  The Eagles came back from a 26-23 halftime deficit to out-score the home team. 24-14, in the final 20 minutes. Senior guard Darrell Lampley (Linden, N.J.-Linden-Lakeland C.C.) led EMU with 16 points while junior forward Jamell Harris (Euclid, Ohio-Euclid) had seven points and seven rebounds.  Tim Toler paced NIU with 11 points.

CHECKING THE SERIES:  Northern Illinois has a 49-30 lead in the series that started in the 1926-27 season.  The two teams have split the last 10 games with Eastern winning this year's first meeting, 47-40, Jan. 7, in DeKalb, Ill.  Northern had won both games in 2010-11 and EMU captured two of three games in the 2009-10 season.

BRACKETBUSTER EFFORTS:  After Saturday's, Feb. 18, loss at Green Bay, the Eagles are 5-4 in BracketBuster games.  The completed list of EMU BracketBuster games is listed below.

EAGLES MAKE NATIONAL NEWS:  With the Eastern Michigan University men's and women's basketball teams sitting in first place in the Mid-American Conference West Division standings, the Eagles are in an elite category nationally.
Heading into Tuesday, Feb. 21, EMU was one of just five schools across the 32 Division I basketball conferences that have both first-place men's and women's teams. The schools include:
MAC West Division: Eastern Michigan
Southeastern: Kentucky
Sun Belt East: Middle Tennessee
Sun Belt West: UALR
Missouri Valley: Wichita State
Under the direction of first-year Head Coach Rob Murphy, the men (11-16, 6-6) took over sole possession of the MAC's West Division Saturday, Jan. 28, and have held on to that lofty spot since that time.
Meanwhile, Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert's women's team remains in a tie with the University of Toledo for the MAC West lead. The Eagles are 19-7 overall and 11-2 in MAC play.

LOW TOTAL: EMU's nine-point first half at Virgina Tech, Dec. 22, is a modern-day low for an EMU men's basketball squad. The Eagles' 36-point scoring effort in a loss at Purdue, Dec. 11, was the lowest point total for an EMU men's basketball team since the then-Hurons scored 34 in a 54-34 loss in the opening game of the 1956-57 season, Dec. 5, 1956 at home against Hope.
