Donald Scott sets new EMU record in the triple jump

Final Results

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team began its 2012-13 campaign at home as host of the Eagle Holiday Meet with an impressive win against Oakland University and Central Michigan University, Dec. 7, at Bob Parks Track.

With Eagles winning 12 of the 14 events, EMU took first with 142 points as Oakland and Central Michigan followed with 90 points and 59 points, respectively.

“As a staff, we are encouraged by the team's effort and results,” noted EMU Head Coach John Goodridge. “The competition served as a nice evaluation test as well as giving our freshman their first competitive collegiate experience.”

Coach Goodridge had multiple reasons to be pleased with the debut of his incoming class as seven events were won by freshman competing in their first meet for the Green and White.

In his first event as an Eagle, Anthony Jones (Sandusky, Ohio-Sandusky) won the weight throw with a 16.60-meter toss.

Another freshman made an immediate impact as Jeff Elam (Latrobe, Pa-Greater Latrobe Senior) was victorious in the 60-meter high hurdles posting a time of 8.22. Classmate Tyler Ross (Latrobe, Pa-Greater Latrobe Senior) secured the 800-meter run with a 1:54.14 as junior Joshua George (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Frontinac Secondary) took second.

A pair of freshman dashed past the competition in the 400-meter dash. Jason Ervin's (Farmington Hill, Mich.-Farmington) 49.00 posting was enough for first while Matthew Williams (Moreno Valley, Calif-Vista Del Lago) finished second in 49.90.

Coming off a season where he qualified for the NCAA Championships in the triple jump, Donald Scott (Apoka, Fla.-Apoka) started his year off on the right foot by setting a new EMU record in the triple jump with a 15.58-meter leap to take top honors. Scott eclipsed the previous record of 15.50 meters set by Will Harber in 1991. Teammate Solomon Ijah (Murrieta, Calif-Murrieta Valley) finished runner-up to Scott with a triple jump of 14.30 meters.

Competing in multiple events, Ijah's night was not finished. The sophomore leaped his way to the top in the high jump, winning the event with a 2.01-meter leap.

Cameron Bolton (Missouri City, Texas-Hightower) took first in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.89. Later in the evening, he stood atop the podium with a 21.99 finish in the 200-meter dash. Also in that race, freshman Amonta Glasper (Battle Creek, Mich.-Battle Creek Central) finished in 22.43, enough for second place.

EMU cross country runners Austin Lane (Greenwich, N.Y.-Greenwich Central) and Ian Hancke (Haslett, Mich.-Haslett) led the pack in the one mile run with times of 4:19.25 and 4:19.90, respectively, finishing nearly three seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

Max Babits (Fowlerville, Mich.-Fowlerville) and Joe Tesner (Westland, Mich.-Livonia Churchill) swept the top two spots in the pole vault with jumps of 5.18 meters and 5.03 meters, respectively.

Cody Chabola (Ashtabula, Ohio-Edgewood) won the 3,000-meter run in 8:34.27 with fellow Eagle Warren Witchell (Williamstar, Mich.-Dansville) finishing behind him in second place.

Eastern concluded the meet with a victory in the final event of the night, the 4x400-meter relay. The team of  Williams, Elam, Ross and Jay Saunders (Rochester Hills, Mich.-Rochester) ran in 3:19.01 to cap off an opening meet win for the Green and White.

The Eagles will not be back in action until the New Year. EMU will Akron and Buffalo for the EMU Triangular, Jan.11, on Bob Parks Track in Bowen Field House.
