Coach Baird has seven joining the Eagles next year

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University softball team will welcome seven newcomers to the 2014 squad Friday, Dec. 7, announced Head Coach Karen Baird.

Joining the Eagles next year will be Mariah Fox (Midland, Mich.), Alyssa Huntley (Sterling Heights, Mich.-Adlai E. Stevenson), Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Central), Abbie Minsker (Howell, Mich.-Hartland), Taylor Wagner (Marshalltown, Iowa-Marshalltown), Katrina Wyman (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Portage Central) and Meagan Winkelseth (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Ypsilanti) after signing their National Letters of Intent during the early signing period.

"Our 2013 class is very talented," remarked coach Baird. "Each player is going to add more depth to our program's infield, outfield, pitching and catching. We know they will continue to elevate us to the championship program we want to be year-after-year. They are not only talented on the field but off the field as well. We continue to have a high standard in the classroom with our student-athletes and they definitely will continue those expectations off the field. We look forward to seeing them bring their talents to EMU next fall."

“I was living in Texas when I had my first experience at Eastern Michigan University and I knew that I wanted to come back to Michigan to play in college,” said Fox. “When I came to EMU I fell in love with how green the campus was. People were very inviting and I loved the coaches so I knew that EMU was the place for me.”

Huntley mentioned, “I love the atmosphere of a smaller campus.  I really felt at home when I walked around the school and loved how pretty it is.  It's the perfect size for me and I have the opportunity to play D-I softball.  I also felt comfortable and knew I would become a better player because of  the coaches.”

For Kriegshauser it was the, “emphasis on education and academics. Also, when I came to the campus it just felt right for me.”

Minsker said, “I like how academics are important to the softball program and am impressed by their work ethic. The coaches also played a big role in my decision by the way they made me feel comfortable from the minute we met. EMU is definitely the place for me.”

Wagner loved the campus, “Above all else, I'm in love with how beautiful the campus is. Being a part of the softball team is such an amazing opportunity and I'm looking forward to being a student athlete in such a respected education system.”

For Wyman it is a family tradition to come to EMU, “I chose to come to EMU because my great grandfather attended Eastern. I also have several family friends and parents of my friends who have attended and had raving remarks about the atmosphere and the academics. Also, when I visited the school I loved it from my first visit.”

Winkelseth stated, “It is a great campus and I like the size of the school.  I loved the softball program and the positive atmosphere.”
