SYRACUSE, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team fell for just the second time this season Monday night, Dec. 3, with a 84-48 setback to No. 4 Syracuse University inside the Carrier Dome. Glenn Bryant (Detroit, Mich.-Oak Hill Academy) posted a double-double performance for the Eagles (5-2) with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
EMU has now dropped a road contest to the Orange (6-0) in consecutive seasons by the same 36-point margin. SU won for a program-best 26th straight time on their home court while improving to 2-1 all-time against the Eagles.
The Green and White entered Monday's matchup boasting the eighth-best scoring defense in the nation, but was largely outmatched by Syracuse's press. The Eagles committed 24 turnovers which resulted in 31 points for the Orange. In comparison, EMU converted just nine points off of 18 SU turnovers.
Derek Thompson (Detroit, Mich.-Melvindale) led all scorers with 18 points, going 7-of-18 with a trio of three-pointers in the second half. Bryant was 6-of-18 to go along with a perfect 4-of-4 effort from the free throw line. The double-double was his first as an Eagle.
Da'Shonte Riley (Detroit, Mich.-Detroit Country Day) was a force under the basket for the Eagles, denying six Syracuse shots. Those six blocks fell just one shy of his career-best mark of seven.
As a team, the Eagles shot at a 29.5 percent clip (18-of-16) with a 4-of-19 (21.1 percent) effort from downtown and 8-of-12 (66.7 percent) from the charity stripe.
Five Syracuse players reached double figures, with DaJuan Coleman's 14 points pacing the Orange. Brandon Triche's strong second half gave him 12 points for the game, with Mike Carter-Williams, Jerami Grant and Trevor Cooney all posting 11. SU was a blistering 44.1 percent (30-of-68) from the field and went 5-of-22 (22.7 percent) from long distance.
After the Orange sunk the game's first bucket, the Eagles went on a 10-1 run for a 10-3 advantage five minutes into the game. Thompson accounted for six of those points and Bryant tallying the other four. A stifling EMU zone defense along with Syracuse beginning the game shooting just 2-of-13 contributed to the Eagles' early edge.
Syracuse tied the score, 12-12, at the 8:55 mark after Triche filled a put-back layup and followed with a turnover which he converted for an easy score. That series of plays touched off a 27-5 run for the Orange; a run which would span the remainder of the half. EMU committed a rash of turnovers which led to 18 Syracuse points and a 35-17 lead for the home team at the break.
The Eagles were held without a field goal for the final 7:02 of the first half, receiving just three points off of free throws from Thompson and Jalen Ross (Greensboro, N.C.-Greensboro Day). EMU finished the first half 6-of-22 (27.3 percent) from the floor and 0-of-6 from long range. Thompson's nine points led all scorers after 20 minutes.
Syracuse's early struggles were nearly forgotten by the end of the first half, as the Orange shot 11-of-31 (35.5 percent) from the floor despite going 1-of-10 from beyond the arc. Carter-Williams and Triche each had seven points at the break.
Both sides traded buckets to start the second half as Thompson continued to fuel the EMU offense with a pair of three-pointers. The Orange kept pace with eight points of their own to maintain a 44-23 lead with 16:27 to play.
With 13:52 remaining, Bryant slammed home a fast-break dunk. After Syracuse answered with a long ball, Byrant responded with a second-straight dunk to make it 49-31. But the Orange poured in four straight makes for eight points and left EMU with a 57-31 deficit with 11:24 remaining.
Bryant and Thompson continued to rack up points, with Byrant cashing in 12 and Thompson nine during the final 20 minutes of play. EMU had a final opportunity in the closing seconds to climb over the 50-point plateau, but Anthony Strickland's (Ypsilanti, Mich.-D.H. Rockford) attempt bounced off the rim and into the hands of the SU defense.
Eastern Michigan will host Purdue University Saturday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m. inside the Convocation Center. The game will be available on ESPN3 and 89.1 FM (WEMU).
