EVANSTON, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) —
The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team completed the first leg of the two-day Midlands Championships hosted by Northwestern University Saturday, Dec. 29. Redshirt junior Jared Germaine rattled off four straight victories to earn a spot in the quarterfinal of the consolation bracket Sunday.

Of the 12 EMU grapplers to travel to the Land of Lincoln for the post-Christmas tournament, Germaine was the only Green and White representative to survive the first day of competition. The 125-pounder still has a chance at third place and can make it two years in-a-row in which reaches the podium with a top-eight finish.

Eastern Michigan sits in 27th place out of 48 teams with a score of 14.5. Illinois leads the way in team scoring with a mark of 61.5.

The tournament began on a sour note for Germaine, who lost a close 4-1 decision to Oklahoma's Jarrod Patterson, who was awarded the No. 6 spot at 125 lbs. Germaine fought his way back into the running with four consecutive wins with three decisions and a major decision.

An upset-minded Germaine opens Sunday facing No. 1-ranked Anthony Zanetta from Pittsburgh. Zanetta was relegated to the consolation bracket after falling in the fourth round Saturday.

A trio of Eagles registered two wins before bowing out on day one. At 157 lbs., redshirt senior Aaron Sulzer won his first bout before falling just short against No. 4 Walter Peppelman of Harvard. He then rolled past Troy Hernandez of Penn, 13-1, but was eliminated by No. 5 RJ Pena from Oregon State.

Returning to the mat for the first time since the EMU Open, Nov. 3, was redshirt junior Nick Whitenburg, who went 2-2 in the double-elimination format at 197 lbs. Whitenburg won his first match in both the championship and consolation brackets. His second win came against No. 8-ranked Christian Boley of Maryland, 9-7.

At heavyweight, redshirt junior Khodor Hoballah made it further into the championship bracket than any EMU wrestler with two victories to start the day. Hoballah then ran into No. 1 Jarrod Trice from Central Michigan, where he dropped a 4-0 decision. He lost his final match, 2-1, to Evan Knutson of North Dakota State.

Day two of the 50th-annual Midlands begins Sunday, Dec. 30, at noon with semifinals, consolation and seventh-place matches. First, third and fifth place matches commence at 7 p.m.
