Eagles Use Second Half Surge to Top Crusaders, 75-64

Eastern opened its 2012-13 preseason schedule with an exhibition victory against Madonna

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team opened its 2012-13 exhibition campaign Friday, Nov. 2, with the first of their two-game preseason. Despite trailing, 37-33, at the half, the Eagles climbed back to top Madonna University at the Convocation Center, 75-64.
Eastern was led by Miranda Tate (Boling Brook, Ill.-Boling Brook (Providence)) and Natachia Watkins (South Euclid, Ohio-Brush) contibruting 20 points apiece. Olivia Fouty (Toledo, Ohio-Sylvania Northview) added 12 points and 11 rebounds to join Watkins with 11 rebounds give each of them a double-double. As a team, the Eagles shot 44.3% (31-for-70) from the field and had a 50-20 advantage in the paint over MU.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 10-5 lead in the first half fueled by Fouty, who accounted for eight of the Eagles first 10 points from the field. Madonna fought back to even the score at 20-20 before going on 17-13 run to close out the half, giving the Crusaders a four point lead going into the break.
Although they trailed by four at the intermission, the Eagles out-rebounded Crusaders 29-16 and picked up 13 caroms on the offensive end in the first half. The Crusaders were paced by going 5-of-13 from three-point land, while EMU ended the first half 0-for-7.
The defense stepped up in the second half after allowing Madonna to shoot 40.6 percent in the first half. EMU held Madonna to just 28.1 percent in the second half, while capitalizing on seven turnovers leading to eight points.
With the Eagles trailing, 51-53, halfway through the second half, EMU went on a 17-0 run over 3:34 to go up 68-53. Watkins, Tate and Amber Bogard (Cleveland, Ohio-Beachwood) each contributed multiple baskets during the big EMU run.
Madonna's Shantelle Herring was limited to only four points in the second half after leading all scorers at the half with 19.
The Eagles will wrap up their exhibition season when they host Wayne State University, Tuesday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m. Eastern's regular season will open Sunday, Nov. 11, when it hosts Northeastern at noon in the first-of-five home games to start the season.
